South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Paul John:
Hi all. Andrew great photo there on the Black Rock. Nice to see the old Rhymney brewery logo with the horse and jockey on the Royal Oak pub wall. Both pubs sold the local beer. Cheers!

+1. great photo’s,
I wonder if that would have been the main route to the Midlands for the steel traffic from Ebww Vale on to the A40 or would they have dropped down the Ebbw valley via Pontypool, Usk and then into Raglan? Either way a hard route with only 120 or 150 hp on tap at 24 tons on an 8 legger, I can remember Saviem commenting that he had never seen more worn out lorries than the ones from South Wales! Cheer’s Pete

Andrew, watched a Wynns heavy haulage dvd the other day and according to John the first 100 ton unit they had built was
this Foden. Apparenly only 3 were made and one went to Australia and one went somewhere else.

Morning Andrew,
I’m going to guess that the pic is taken at Patent Shaft? only going by the flats in the background and Lye Spencer’s Merc!
I can spot Lloyd’s, Burholme, Cardiff Transport and possibly a Haywards F10.
That is a rare shot of Mansell’s F10 day cab, I wonder if was purchased used from a petroleum company or Bulmer’s Cider? Cheer’s Pete
ps. I like the comment in the thread above regarding the giraffe and a jumper, I’m nicking that one!

Hi Pete.
You mentioned Burholme in your post,do you mean Burnholme transport from Penrith, green wagons?
They were regulars on the 74 and M6 and I was told they were also known as “Hard Shoulder Haulage”.

Also known as Fawlty    Towers transport

Lance Biscomb:
Also known as Fawlty    Towers transport

Were they that bad Lance?

Yes those was the ones I was talking about Chris!

I think I have mentioned this fact in a much earlier post but my long gone Marra the late Harry Fearon ( H. & M E Fearon of Mealsgate) ran many F86 units over the years and he worked them hard double shifting on ISO Containers between a large customer at Workington to and from terminals at Immingham and Trafford Park to mention two. And guess who regularly bought the F86’s Harry sold ------- Burnholme of Penrith ! So I guess their various derogatory nicknames were as a result of running H & ME Fearon’s well worked F86’s even though they had been well looked after by Harry they were still a “boy” doing a “mans” job ! Cheers Bewick.

A pair

One for Pete 359

They were a good bunch of lads that loaded back out of Shotton with coil for Glasgow or the north east, a number of the lads went to work for Barrett and Graham on tanks when they packed up from memory, always looked a smart fleet, but as you say had a certain nick name around time spent on the hard shoulder

They were quite a substantial outfit in the later 50’s into the 60’s and IIRC they were part of The Burnholme & Forder Group the history of which I have little knowledge but again IIRC this group broke up amid quite considerable acrimony then I guess Dennis Dixon salvaged his part and carried on but again I will stand to be corrected ! Cheers Bewick.

Hi Dennis, was that Dixon’s that also ran out of Shotton, had ERFs?, they used to take coil to Belfast with us, I think they ended up buying some of Shone’s coil trailers when they packed up in 94,was it RF Dixon■■?

Hiya Steelboy I think R F Dixon was one of Dennis’s sons who continued in the business after I guess his Dad had passed away but I’m not sure as I never had any dealings with them nor did I ever come in contact with Burnholme as they operated in a different industry and areas to Bewick Transport. I was however good Pals with both the late Curly Cargill ( D & M Cargill) and George Holliday ( G W Holliday) who were both based in Penrith, well Curly was originally based at the filling station that front’d the A6 at Hackthorpe before he moved onto the Gillwilly estate in Penrith. Cheers Dennis.

No sorry Chris the Dixon we were on about was from Penrith and other than the name change they were identical to their predecessor Burnholme ! Cheers Dennis.

Great looking Lewis Foden ,what are the brackets on front wheels ? , bit of a different way to sign write the name
