Hi all. Scania81. Great photos of Maldwyn Davies yard. One shot there has an Atki and Foden in it. He kept those for ever doing lump coal out of Merthyr Vale, and Penrichaber (Mountain Ash) to local coal merchants yard. Their office was a house in the main street leading up to the yard. Maldwyns brother ran the garage. Many moons ago I took the Atki up to Oxford for him. I must admit it was slow but sure. As old as it was it went well. After driving 232 Deutz’s , and 2300/2500 Dafs all 8 wheelers it was quite an experience. Probably around 1983 iirc and the Atki was M reg! I saw it in 1989 in Ryans blending plant on the docks at Cardiff painted black.
A.J. Williams of Merthyr had two similar Atki’s brand new, around 1975/76.
Another Hirwaun haulier was G.L. Williams who ran a nice clean fleet of Foden’s out of Penderyn and Vaynor quarries. They ran dust into LLanwern, and sand from Dallimore’s back up. Cushy number that, two round trips a day.Paul
Hi Paul ,
Ronnie S.Evans and several other long standing bulk hauliers used to work closely with Maldwyn Davies.Great to hear from you mate. There is a threat of a massive construction project being given the green light in Swansea bay? They are potentially and maybe? Going to build a lagoon to harness the power of the tide and create electricity. If the project goes ahead? And it’s all gone very quiet at the moment! Then I hear Vaynor quarry and another in north Devon will be supplying the stone for several years! Though it’s all,if,perhaps and maybe at the moment.
Regards Andrew.
Hi Andrew, the project in Swansea has been given the green light hansons got the contract to supply cement from Swansea plant when it starts ,we will be supplying the admixture for them from Sika ,I was told this as we on contract to hansons all over the country cheers John

Hi Andrew, hope all is well with you mate.
If John has got the scoop on the job going ahead that’s good news.
Sounds as if Swansea is the place to be these days. My daughter just accepted a place in Swansea University’s nursing program as an international student. Cardiff called wanting to interview her, but she turned them down along with Valdosta State University in Georgia. Swansea University has been voted best student experience in the U.K. Probably means, party city! I doubt if I would recognize any of it now as I’m told quite a lot of building has gone on.
Looks as if a lot of jobs could be created which is very good news.
I forgot to mention in my earlier post all those Atki’s and all but one of GL William’s Foden’s all had Gardner 180s fitted. GL William’s son had a Y reg with a RR265 fitted. Iirc a photo of that truck was featured in an advert and has been posted on here. Back in 1983 it was a flying machine!
Regards Paul
Cracking shots of BRS Swanasea, first image of some old atki,s and leylands and one very new looking AEC Mk 5■■, my dad drove a new AEC Mk 5 in 1963 for Noel Ricketts, very nice truck in its day.

Hi David,
Ricketts photos are rare,we had some on here 8/9 years ago from Dai “Cap” Davies.I went to their former Ewenny yard recently,as im sure your aware its a huge garden centre type place these days. They must have been a fair sized operator in their day?Tbh,i cant recall the firm. Those MK5 AEC were a beautiful lorry.
regards Andrew.
Hi all,
Another BRS Swansea depot photo, courtesy of Bryndon Evans. These 8 wheelers worked out of The Albion Works In Briton Ferry.
Hello Andrew
With regard to the proposed barrage at Swansea, the shark who seems to have convinced the white elephant in Cardiff Bay that he is the man for the job features in Private Eye magazine nearly every issue.
He owns a quarry in Somerset/ Devon and his plan is to supply all the rock from there to build the jetty, which is planned to be at least 5 miles long. His original plan was to truck all the rock through a small village until residents put the kybosh on it, now he wants to build a small dock on the coast to ship it across The Bristol Channel.
The apparent obstacle to all this is that he wants a guaranteed price for the electricity produced, which is even more expensive than that produced from the Hinckley Point reactor, should it ever get built.
Nice to see you celebrating Porthcawl`s win this afternoon. Best Wishes Mike

Hi mike,
Regarding the Swansea barrage proposal, personally I don’t think it will happen. To me it’s at the money stage now and it’s just gone very quiet in that regard.Good to see you and also Beaver680 at Porthcawl RFC earlier today,an outstanding win.
Regards Andrew.

Hi all,
Big thanks to Pete Smith for sending an old nostalgia book about The Steel Company of Wales’ Margam works. This photo is the former main entrance, this rigid is pictured leaving The Abbey,The new road runs right passed we’re this lorry is photographed.over the years there must have been trillions of Tonnes of steel on lorries that started their journey there…Morning Andrew,
Is that lorry still on the steel works internal road heading towards the original A48?
There are some good facts and figures in that book considering its 1960! I presume the book predates Llanwern as it mentions a tie up with Richard Thomas and Baldwin about a new venture which I presume was Llanwern, Cheer’s Pete
Hi Pete,
That lorry is leaving The Abbey, right where the new road runs now.The book you kindly sent is awesome.Richards Thomas and Baldwin afaiaa was Ebbw Vale and Llanwern steelworks.
Regards Andrew.
Evening all. If I remember right Andrew, Stillers took over Norths around late 2004/early 2005 as my brother done a stint with them around that time. I can remember the white ERF tractor units Norths had on the Rockwool contract parked in Stillers yard with all the stickers removed.
Hi Jason,
Not for the first time,I’ve learnt something there.I remember Stiller buying Starr Roadways of Bilston and Carline in South Wales ,along with a few other names along the way.Though I wasn’t aware they had ever bought Winford North.Thank you.
Regards Andrew.
Tremendous photo’s Andrew. The older lorries seem to have character and the guys that drove them tough as old boots.
Can anyone put a model type to the van in the photo with the BRS Dodge, J4s were square, that one is rounder, possibly J2? The JU250 which came much later seemed to be a mix of both!
Regards Paul
