South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Hi Andrew P, the grey prime E.R.F, was bought in 1980. The reg no should have been FWN 149W,Later being reg as KEP 774X.The erf further back I cant identify but the one on the right with the atky crash bar as a bumper is OEP 716R.

Excellent, many thanks Dai. I think you have hit on a practice which a lot of accountants used to advise on, i.e. if it looks like you are going to pay a lot of tax, buy some more lorries and your tax bill will reduce. Far better to spend the money on lorries even if there is no work for them than hand it over to HMRC. This happened a few times at ITS; two ERFs were delivered new in 1979, but did not hit the road as CTH349V and CTH350V until 1980. It also looks like ERFs FWN145/6/7/8W may have been 1980 deliveries, but my insurance records show them as entering service with ITS on St David’s Day 1981. Presumably by the time the one which should have been FWN149W was ready for the road, it was 01 August or later, which is why the FWN mark was surrendered and it entered service as KEP774X. Unfortunately I do not have a date for this one. OEP716R was added to the fleet on 05 October 1976 but did not actually enter service until 06 May 1977.

The green ERF looks very smart. Did Jones have it new or secondhand? The only reason I ask is that the registration looks very familiar - was it ex AH Gore from High Littleton? She’s also Bristol reg - was there a dealer over in South or West Wales or did they all come from this side of the water?

So many questions, so little memory!

It was ex A.H.Gore. Bought from a dealer in England somewhere, Gardner 300 engine. The day cab was bought as a non runner direct from Calor at auction in Colchester. David Jones drove the Ex Gore sleeper. Alan had a 6x2 sleeper too with a E290 ■■■■■■■■ and when the L10 was rebuilt John drove that.

Wow what a walk down memory lane this thread has been for me.

I saw my stepdad mentioned back on page 59. He was the P&O Pandoro driver who operated out of Hills Transport Cardiff in the 70’s - John ‘johnny’ Long. After marrying my mum in my birth town of Liverpool he was offered the position based in Cardiff and we moved lock stock and new born baby (my little sis) from Liverpool, down to Cardiff. I was 5 or 6 years old and this was the early 70’s. Been here ever since so count myself an honorary welshman.

This was when my relationship with Hills Transport (and Atki Borderer’s, AEC Mandator’s, and more latterly Leyland Marathon’s) began. Although John drove for Pandoro he was always ‘obblin’ for Hills Transport on the side. So for me every Saturday and most school holidays thru the 70’s were spent asleep slumped over the engine hump in a Hills aki borderer, gratefully grasping a handfull of copper coin which the drivers would always hand out whenever they saw me. Real happy childhood memories for me and it was great to see Johnny Long mentioned in South Wales trucking ‘lore’

As a result of a childhood spent in the noisy, uncomfortable cab of a truck I have been a HGV driver ever since I was old enough to take the test (1988). Having worked for all the usual suspects around south wales, today I continue to ply my trade with John Raymond Transport in Bridgend. Where I now live.

This was my son recently, who is now totally ‘infected’ with trucks and haulage. Despite my own protestations he wants nothing more in life than to be a truck driver. Just like HIS dad.

Sadly I don’t have any pictures of him in a Raymond motor. Health & Safety won’t allow it!

Perhaps there’s a lesson to be learnt here, over why the industry is not attracting new young blood anymore?

This thread is a fantastic walk through the historical bibliography of the south wales trucking scene. Thanks for creating it and long may it continue.

Can anyone help I have photos of my fathers trucks which he ran in the 70’s and early 80’s and don’t know how to upload them on the forum
