I worked for some years for Barrie Williams, TD Williams, Owens, N&A James, Cadwalladers, MAT and a few others! They were all fiddling, as we all were, I don’t know how much of what I earned was ever declared for tax, not much, I suspect! Red diesel, bribes, trip money, etc. One of the above employed a driver who was registered blind! They were good days, but I am amazed that I survived, drink driving, long hours (London, Lisbon, Granada and back to Wales in 6 days, for one company) - (Pamplona, Braga, Dortmund Saturday PM - Venlo Sunday 6PM for another). Dodgy T forms, permits, overweight, bald tyres and discs stored on the floor through the window letter box, stolen pallets, foreign loads, with one of the companies it was considered normal to load somewhere, tip in someone else’s warehouse “Do a foreigner, or 2” reload, drive continuously to make up time and tip the original load, on time. One of the companies bosses got caught stealing, another smuggling. How Caddie kept his wrecks on the road was a great mystery? Three day binges in Dover, Poole, Zeebruge, Barcelona etc. Customs officers selling beer in Cherbourg. Replacing insulation in fridge doors with “Baccy”. I could go on for ever GREAT DAYS, good friends, most now gone over. It had to end one day, but I will keep fond memories. . .
Some great characters - Barrie Williams, George Price, Alan Vale, Neil Butch, Aemon Magee, Big Dan, loads more. . .
