This photo brings back memories,Ravenscraig was a regular pick-up for A E Evans Sheffield depot,Crude Benzole from the coking ovens/by-products plant. Good loading on both day and afternoon shifts, always for Staveley Chemicals Chesterfield.
So were steel products taken to the Craig from South Wales,I think I saw something about Nationwide doing it years ago?

i used to take signode strapping there. and reload slab for p/talbot.you knew you were hitting glasgow, when you could see the smoke from the top of the m74 lanarkshire. a long had pull from carlisle to motherwell.

Hi Chris,
i don’t remember (during 80’s and 90’s) that much welsh coil being taken to ravenscraig? i don’t think ravenscraig had a coating line?,unlike llanwern that did, every welsh haulier in the 80’s and 90’s took coil there 24/7,shotton was a coatings plant then aswell and literally millions of tonnes of port talbot coil went there.i went in ravenscraig just twice with joint to back load coke for the abbey, joints only Scottish steel drop then was stelrad ideal at Dalbeattie. the main firm to my memory on the South Wales Scotland steel work were Cardiff transport.nationwide are a firm from when I was a kid,was a vast plant ravenscraig, wasn’t it the third biggest uk steel production facility in the 80’s and 90’s?
Regards andrew.

Yes,it was Cardiff Transport not Nationwide Andrew. I suppose Ravenscraig would be third after Redcar and Port Talbot. I think some of the coil to Shotton went by rail but it must have been busy on that A49 night and day with you lads. Did you go up and back in a shift, loaded both ways?
Regards andrew.

Just found these 2 in my Mother’s collection of slides. Pontypool 1963

Hi Chris,
Yes,though for the final 8 years of trading joint ran most of the baled scrap out of shotton for port talbot and llanwern.you didn’t have congestion back then in the way you do now.with a good motor and not much hanging around tipping and loading then you could tip in most of the north west steel drops the furthest was walker Blackburn and the m65? Wasn’t open fully then and reload for port talbot and run back to the yard/abbey as a day run.the Shrewsbury boys also used to do this,“rounders” as they were known.

Hi Tidderson, lovely old shot i think that depot was known as the turnpike garage in New inn later used by Tim Price , whose own fleet was de nationalised by BRS . regards Keith . P S in later years the trailers at this depot had air suspension for the haulage of glass .

a very nice welsh dragon.

hi all,i remember running to ravenscraig with cardiff transport you tip dalbeattie then up to the yard in scotland, on nights there was charnock richards change over one trailer came down with 3 steel slabs on it ,the scotch shunter would load 1 take it to yard tip return back load ,tip back in then put the others on top total load on trailer 70tonnes then strip them of in newport yard and put on seperate trailers for llanwern or pt  saving on fuel and time :astonished:

Hi, smallcoal,
sounds a bit like the Irish lads who would load 20 tons of steel at Llanwern, then run up to Rhymney for another 20 tons of polythene on top!
