Hi Andrew, greetings from across ā€œThe Borderā€ Brilliant pic of Davies RE29 Reiver ,are they still running from Llansawel because I remember seeing their LAD cabbed Dodge D308s when I was a small boy travelling with Warners drivers from the the Grand Metropolis which rejoices in the name of Aston upon Carrant! Having said that I suppose I am still quite small really ! Changing the subject to that of John Pearce from Glyneath I’m pretty sure that he worked for Sir Lindsay Parkinson on the opencast as a fitter at Glyneath. Actual name of site was Hendre Fawr ? I was subbing there with a couple of B100 International Drotts but they ended up with too much month left at the end of the money and went bust owing me loads of dosh . C’est la vie monsieur .One thing has always put me in good stead ,Andrew is that I am a true pessimist and pessimism is the finest Insurance Policy against disappointment! i.e if I didn’t have bad luck I wouldn’t have any .Best Regards and keep it coming Noel

Noel,
even before I read your name at the end of that post I had recognised your voice.
Neil.

i spotted my old butty noels voice icould sit with him for hours how are you noel regards rowly

Hello Dave and co. Re South Wales hauliers i was running to South Wales from Kent back in the late 60s, 12 drops starting off Newport/ Hereford area, finishing up Pembroke/ Fishguard. Then load back out of Trostre/ Felindre and later FWT at Monmouth with Radiators. Was offered a job with them as a changeover man at Minster Lovell Tollhouse but never took it. We were on return load money, steel paid £2 a ton roughly, radiators 5 bob a mile, twice as much for half the load in weight, and easier drops. In those days it was still better to travel via Oxford A40 The M4 only went as far as Maidenhead and you could pick it up again at Tog Hill. But Reading and Newbury in between and twice as much traffic. There were still plenty of cafes open along the A40, all nighters like Blunts, etc. Also known as the Swilly Pond where the steamers from the old days would fill up from a pond there at the top of Chalk. The Windrush was always busy at night, youd see all the South Wales boys plus the mid Wales, Bulmers, Forest of Dean lads, magical days, Wish I had some decent photos. The Llansawel livestock waggon looks well. Did you know he is presently restoring the Mickey Mouse Foden he had new in the 60s, sold on and recently bought back. I think so anyway. Good Luck/ Al

Hi Graham ,small world isn’t it? Remember Dunraven and all the Cornismen from Mid Cornwall Contractors that worked there under the management of Alan Langley and Gerald (Mitch) Mitchell and if I remember correctly the site agent for Parkys was a total, eccentric by the name of Harry Bryan ( I think- old grey matter not as good as it was) . Moving on somewhat from the60’s to the 90’s I was working in the traffic office for Ralph Davies in Cheltenham and a John Pearce driver came in looking for a job . My job entailed new driver assessment so when I asked him had he ever driven a left ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  and he replied that he hadn’t. I thought ā€œHere we go another white knuckle rideā€ However he was spot on and took to it like a duck to water .I usually had a pretty good idea before we left the yard by observing eye, hand and foot co-ordination. The man’s name? Kim Jeffers - a true natural ( I learnt through employing Kim that the proper name for the place where I had observed the awesome vehicles of Trevor G Philips as a boy is Cadoxton-juxta-Neath ) Sorry about the digression Best regards -Noel Minchew

Hi Rowly , it is indeed an honour to be referred to as your old butty and the compliment about the voice!! Close your eyes and imagine the inimitable ( one of my all time heroes) Richard Burton uttering those immortal words - " Broadsword calling Danny Boy" just the thought of it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck ( got none on the head ) You take care Mr Ward and I look forward to our next rendezvous Best regards ,Noel (P.S will have the Renault 385 Dustbinliner - as Paul Edwards describes it on show this year in as bought condition )

i found this remains of an old mandator in blaenavon b4 xmas

Hello Smallcoal,
It is not a Mandator.- It’s a Beaver, with a Leyland fuel tank and rear axle.
There is a 680 engine under the cab. - Can you tell us the reg No ?
regards - Hywel.

hi mate,it been stripped no plates on it at all thats how i found her  cheers john

Hi Smallcoal,
That Beaver or Badger could be H Morgan - Cwm, as you found it in Brynmawr.
It is in their colours - Green and Red. cheers - Hywel.

Hi all,
Correct howel that is the turbo beaver owned by Morgan’s of cwm

Hi Andrew if it’s a Beaver with a turbo it’s a fairly late one and the turbo version of the 680 was the 690 not to be confused with the AEC AV 690 ( As always, I stand to be corrected!) Noel

Nice to see the I.T THOMAS Routeman , they owned the Quarry a couple of miles from here, sold it to McAlpine in the 80’s.

E.W.

Hello laurie,
Although i never worked on parkinsons a friend of mine occasionally mentioned Harry Bryan ,as you say he was odd to say the least.i remember MCC Roche when they came up to build the first dual part of the A465,think they had a fleet of euclid R35s Cat 988 etc, must have been around 1969/70.We have a cornish man at walters who was on that job and never went home, must have been the local beer or possibly something else.not sure if John Pearce was a spare Euc driver at Dunraven.
kind regards graham.
