hi john smiths any more photos of smithent dat tondu
this is a picture of smiths enterprises scania in 1970 when she was newHi John, you may remember Smiths putting 2 new CAT loading shovels into Newport docks early 80s. I can not remember the model but they could load 20 tonne in one go. Cracking machines they were.
A blending shed had been set up and the dockers were running it, they had been trained on the CATs and let loose. Danny Eagan of Pontypridd had put a bunch of old 8 wheelers on the job. By the end of the first day half had been put out of service, the body’s all torn up by the great British dockworker.
If they had reality shows back then, these guys would be stars. I dont think anyone could act so useless, lol.
Hi paul this is a picture of caterpillar 992 at newport docks see transporter bridge in the background i was a fitter looking after these machine they had 20yd buckets on coal they took the dockers off the machine only to be paid to sit in canteen while our boys operated machinesONE OF THE BOYS DAI TONDU CAT DRIVER
I’ve scanned in some old photos.
This was taken by me around 1993 at the junction of Nine mile point ind. est. on the road between Crosskeys and Blackwood.
The 8X4 Ginaf was taking a crawler crane away from the [then under construction] Newbridge/ Pontllanfraith bypass and appears to have come to grief after climbing one of the first hills on its route.
Neil.
This one was delivering bridge girders for the aforementioned bypass, I think its one of John Goldings fleet, the girder probably came from Fairfield Mabey in Chepstow.
Neil.
Some old pics taken in the New inn, Cwmbran area, again early 90’s.
