Some Questions on Canada

Would appreciate it if I could have a few questions answered.
Interested in going to work in Canada for a few months to see how it goes before considering a permanent move.
1)Would I need a visa (Live in UK)?
2)Does Canada accept the UK Driving Licence or do you have to sit a test over there?
3)Would employers hire someone who has recently passed their c and c+e but has no driving experience?
4)Do they recognise ADR/HIAB Certification?

  1. Yes: The firm you go and work for will sort that out they have a scheme for bringing in foreign nationals called the PNP. Look around the threads there is plenty of info on that.

  2. Canada does recognise the British licence but you will still have to do some training. Some of the employers will pay for it but might deduct it from your salary.

  3. You need at least 2 years experiance.

  4. Not sure about that.

R.H.Trans in Lethbridge Alberta are recruiting at the moment, they are holding interviews in Manchester from the 9th-14th Aug.

If your near any of the truck shows this year there is usually some stands with people recruiting. Truckfest Scotland is on this weekend at Ingleston near Edinburgh if you can make it up to there, have a look round.

1 bit of advice I will give you is don’t be too hasty do plenty of research.
Canadian Companies are the same as British companies, I.E: they want as much work for as little money and it’s a big step to make.

Read all the threads there are some horror stories but then again there are some who have gone out there and it’s been great.

If you decide to go, good luck and I hope it works out for you.

Key bit of info that!! :unamused: :unamused:

Use the search button, do all your reading-up & research and then come and ask the questions that still haven’t been answered for you.

It would take ages for people to keep repeating the info that is already here on the forum, every time it is asked. Thank goodness for the search facility!!

Just for info. Be very careful of the PNP scheme as a starting point. The main trouble is that you usually need to use a lawyer to start the ball rolling from the UK. For your own sake, please heed this. If any firm directs you to an immigration agency or specialist then tell them not to worry. They are not worth it. You can do it all yourself once you get the written job offer and LMO from the firm you will work for. Fax copies are accepted by the Embassy and by all concerned. I got my LMO by signing the last page of the form and faxing it back. When the police check finally got back, I faxed that to the Embassy and had my letter within 5 days.
Under the HRSDC programme, you need only the job offer in writing, the Police Check, your completed work permit form and a labour market opinion which needs to go to the CHC in London along with £70 odd for the permit.

You do NOT need $10000 in the bank, and you can be here in a matter of weeks.

I started looking for a job here in October, came to see the firm in mid November and started work for them on January 16th.

As for the driving test, it’s really no big deal. The company I am working for paid the training and test fees, and I only owe them the first year. As my work permit has their name on it that’s no problem at all. Your ADR and Hiab permits mean little here. The firm will give you training for DG stuff on their own ticket. The experience thing is something you would have to sort out with the company when you contact them.

I am now starting the paperwork for my permanent residency. This should take 4-6 months to complete.

I can only say that this is the best move I ever made. The firm is far superior to any UK firm I worked for. They back you all the way, and support your family when they need it.
