Hi Danne, this DAF 3300 reg A657 DGX was owned by Alan Johnson of Braintree when this photo was taken, some where in Germany I would reckon. When he bought it from someone in Southern England it was painted in the Daf Orange and had been a cancelled Turkish order. He got rather fed up with Turkish drivers flashing and waving to him that he decided to change the colour, this respray was done by Steve Grey of Greyhound Commercials Braintree, Who also maintained it for several years.
Alan had the two long range tanks and tool boxes made and fitted as well as the roo bar from Turkey.
He later registered it with his personal number plate , which was A20 ASJ.
When I bought it from him i re registered it as A17 DKS hence the three different numbers.
Best Wishes for 2016 to all on Trucknet uk From jamie.
I saw pictures of this on another thread some time ago (DAF 2800 thread perhaps…) and was impressed with it, especially as the caption underneath stated that unlike the usual 3300s, which had ZF sychro-boxes, these Turk-spec 3300s still had 13-speed Fullers in them - including this one, presumably. Robert:)
I had one of these Turkish DAF’s. A 469 EAJ. I bought it in 1988 from Cleveland Tankers in Middlesbrough. It had had a very reasonable time with them from new, only doing Middlesbrough to Switzerland all the time, and the driver a bloke called Ken had really looked after it. I was in an accident with it in 1990 on the old A65, damaging the cab pretty badly. It went into Thompsons of Beverly who were the DAF agents at that time. They ordered me a new Cab, Wow? The Cab that was sent over from Holland was totally different, it was a different colour inside, and the whole back of the Cab was upholstered in a suede finish, there were no side or rear windows, and the doors were in a type of leather, plus the dash had a yellow plastic finish to it.
Now the original Chassis, Wheels, Running Gear, Engine and Gearbox were used again, just the new Cab fitted on. With regard to the comment above, this Turkish DAF had the poxy ZF Box in it, It was a real pain. I would have far preferred the old 13 Speed Fuller that I had had in the 2800 DKS.

Hello John, D280 in your photo is obviously in Oldham yard, it ended up at Thornaby, I drove it for about two weeks and even though it must have been 10 years old at the time it was a hell of motor, I’d drive it now. One of these was returning from Clitheroe after tipping nitric and was pulled for doing 53mph (I think) up Beamsley hill, the driver (I’ll save his blushes) was told by the copper, ‘I could understand it if you were doing 53 going downhill but going up is taking the p***’ Regards, Mizzo.
Some nice pics took by owner

Hi mizzo re Sadler D280CHN DAF2800
Tony Wallace was the driver who had this from new at Oldham and even to this day(met up with him only last month) he still says it was one of the best motors he ever had the pleasure to drive and he has driven most of the older vehicles as well as the modern ones.John.
Hello,
Don’t know if this counts as proper, but the old girl didn’t let me down.
Did 50’odd trips with it, and well after this photo was taken… I bought it off general express,.
First Daf I had in 1975 was with Jenkinsons Transport in Salford a 2800 DKS which as I remember has the 310 or 320 engine with the Fuller 14sp box, 4x3 + 2 crawlers, one which you could use in intermediate and was the same ratio as low 4th but then you could select high then a quicker change in 5th intermediate. Only needed to do this when heavy and on some of the long climbs in Germany, Turkey and Iran etc. Going from 4th low to 5th inter was such a slow change on a big hill you would have to go straight back to low box! GND600N. Grahem Cartmail from Stafford had its sister 601N.u
Sorry some of my images come upside down and cannot find a way to change them. Never happened on FB?

Hey, if the wheels are on top, that’s not good.
Eric,
Hi all, loving the pics of the DAFs bringing back lots of memories.
Just to add my 2 pence, back in the 80s I was an apprentice at Winteringham Haulage, Heckmondwike, He went onto DAFS back in 1974 and stuck with them till he sold out to his daughter and son in law…
These were not the most powerful, lightest, cheapest or fastest motors of the era but they were, in my experience, super reliable. All ours had the 6 speed ZF with splitter box from the 1974 2600 to the last 2800, even the 2100 4 & 6 wheel rigids and proved totally reliable. We did have a 3300 with the 16sp eco split, but all were reliable. We never changed a clutch or any major components with the exception of a gearbox in the 2100 4 wheeler which was replaced by Northern Commercials “under warranty” at 2 years old !!!
I wish I still had all my photos, lost then in a bitter (is there any other kind) divorce but will see if my old girl has any of my old man’s pics still.
Keep up the good work
Patrick
Nice looking motor, pre face lift , did this have the back to front zf box or the fuller?
