Olog Hai:
I can hardly believe that someone is trying to describe what this job pays as a reasonable wage.
Ignoring the ‘bonus’ ■■■■■■■■ but taking the night out money off, it’s actually £95 per day. Work 12 hours and that’s £7.92ph, and it goes downward from there.
What’s the saying about drivers and their own worst enemies again?
Sadly that has been the story for decades and it is unlikely to change any time soon.
I agree with you. It’s like the oft-mentioned argument that the hourly rate is garbage, ‘but you can get plenty of hours in’. It’s an asinine view to take, but it’s meat and drink to the unscrupulous employer that likes to bleed his staff dry for the absolute minimum in return. While such attitudes remain present among drivers nothing will ever change.
I’m well aware that agencies will promise you the earth and at best you’ll end up with the Isle of Wight if your lucky most of the time. Most people do know that agencies will dress things up but like you say they have the choice to work there or try for something better. If they put the effort in they may find a better number but they do think they’re on a good screw with an extra £ per hour but none of the real full time benefits, which can be very handy if needed like sick pay etc.
Peoples attitudes towards work will always be different if someone wants top money and can’t get it they’ll never be happy and always grumble about it but like yourself if you can find a job or way of work your happy with and do a bit of give and take you should get along fine.
From what i see with drivers that come into work the happier ones on artic work are normally on day rate/salaried and they are most probably finished at a reasonable hour too.

The answer may be a review of the term “give and take” and that it should apply to all parties. Many employers are more than happy with the “take” side but rather reluctant when it comes to the “give” bit.
If everyone worked together as a team things would improve but who is going to make the first move?

From my own experience, I know that being salaried, I know what I get in the bank at the end of the week, and i have budgeted my life to that. I also know within reason, when I start and finish. Where most salaried drivers who get wound up go wrong, is their ‘the quicker I finish, the more I get paid per hour’. The slightest delay makes them loose their rag, they will not take a minute more than 45 minute break, and go flat out everywhere.

Same as that. I know what my top line will be for the year. Money in bank every month. Plus night out expenses, of course, and maybe a nice Christmas bonus, if all goes well.
Want an early finish Friday? Get up early to get home early, but shagged out and irritable? No thank you. I set my own start/finish times within reason. Hourly rate? Never worked it out, and If I did, itd probably be not very much. But so what? Since Im not at home from Mon morn until Fri p.m., almost no-one will pay for every minute Im away from home. Id rather drive steady, take a few more coffee breaks, and sometimes do a longer day to get to a favourite restaurant than clock watch. It suits me. I dont think its everyones ideal way, but then, Im not saying everyone should do as I do. And please dont tell what a fool I am because I dont want to earn a little more per hour, as some of you do, spending those hours with an idiot planner looking over my shoulder, or sitting in my car commuting everyday.
ive had quite a poor week only three days no nights out and still averaged £138 a day not even full days
local company to me in Lincoln offers £100/110 a day bit more at weekends plus nights out at around £20 always jobs going
a friend who is on for them does six on two off loves it not that he does many 15 hour shifts as he points out to them you want me to work 15 pay me for it
