Smoking while driving

m1cks:
I’m an ex-smoker and agree with Martin 100%
I always thought I was a considerate smoker, always had a window open, always used air freshner, always swept cab after every day so never any ash lying about.
Since quitting, I now know there is no such thing as a considerate smoker.

At our place you get sacked. It’s that simple that even the most stupid of employee can understand.

Out of interest Martin, have you tried giving your firm an invoice from a dry cleaners?

That’ll be the next step Mick, to be fair I nipped it in the Bud when I first started here, but you always get someone who has to upset the apple cart.

All smokers are considerate smokers. All the one’s I’ve ever spoken to anyway. They all care so much about the health and thoughts of us non-smokers and go out of the way to protect us from their habit.

Except for this one guy I went out with once as a drivers mate. The ban had come into force that week and he said as soon as I got in the cab, take no notice of that no smoking sign, I couldn’t give a ■■■■ about it. Looking back I wish I’d told him to do one and walked off the job (only agency work in between my regular contract work), his attitude stunk worse than his breath.

I too am exempt as I drive a Foreign registered vehicle, and I am its only driver, with Harry he has official permission via a letter and good for him. On another note is it only in the UK or is it a Europe wide thing ! just asking. And our beloved government is going to implement in the new year a no smoking ban in cars with children being carried, and i think that is a sensible idea.

I find it very interesting that people are so passionate about this subject and yet willingly put up with sleeping in a vehicle that could have been the habitat of a fleabag who wet the bed at some point and sweated profusely when asleep. Nowt so queer as folk!

True ! but none of us really know what the previous driver had been getting up to before we took over, so glad I got an understanding boss who valeted the cab beforehand !

I’ve had my wagon from Birth, (Easter 2013) & apart from when I’m on holiday,as far as I know I’m the only one who has slept in it.

But then again you never know, perhaps they Smoke & ■■■■■■■■■■ at the same time ? getting it all over the steering wheel-(YUK-Smokey Sticky Steering Wheel)

Nowt so queer as folk !

Because those things can be taken under one’s control quite easily: using extra sheets, a spray of air freshener, one’s own freshly washed pillow cases, etc. But when somebody has been smoking in a cab it permeates everything and there is no quick or easy way of ignoring or eliminating it. No matter how much you wipe the steering wheel, door handles, and gearstick, within minutes it gets onto your hands, and is a disgusting, obnoxious smell.

Can anyone explain why most none smokers,in my experience, have by and large tolerated smokers with only the odd moan, but without exception, again in my experience,ex smokers are fanatical about it.? Some I know even believe smokers should be shot at dawn !! Seems very odd and two faced to me,like born again religious folk.
Regards. John.

I can understand smoking in the workplace is illegal, but surely when you are on break or rest, the cab is no longer a work place. Is smoking allowed then?

NO !

I’m an Ex Smoker (absolutely hate it now) I drive one wagon 99% of the time, with all my kit in, bedding, pillows, coats, spare clothes, towel, tea towel (lots of fabric).

I have to night out once or twice a week but they sometimes take my tractor for the night trunk, I hav’nt got a problem with that, except a couple of weeks ago one of the Trunkey Monkeys decided that it was a good idea to have a ■■■ in the cab, when I got in the next morning-it Reeked of his Stinking Cancer Causing Mess, when I pulled him on it, he started Bleating on about ‘Being Persecuted’
PERSECUTED ! SMERSECUTED ! BOLOX !
I’m the one who’s being put at Risk, he can stop anywhere & coat his lungs with tar if he likes, I have no choice but to drive the wagon after he’s contaminated it with his Fowl Stinking Stink.

If he does it again, I’ll be taking it further & if he looses his 30,000 pound a year job, so be it. Take your Poxy Cigarettes &
Poke 'em where the sun don’t shine.

Snitch, nothing worse than ex smoker acting like this, you should be at least a little understanding that smoking is an easy addiction for some to break and near impossible, i bet when you stopped smoking you could still smoke in the cab previous so you probably aint had this problem, the way i see it if you smoke you smoke as long you aint blowing it in my face if im a non smoker then crack on pal, costing a man his living just coz you dont like it is to much an extreme for me, id snap your jaw if you got me sacked

And you miss the fact he’s already dealt with it when it was first noted. Now it seems it’s happening again so why shouldn’t he escalate things? If the driver smoking is too thick to know the law and remember being told not to smoke in a truck (or more likely in your case - too ignorant) then why shouldn’t it go further. After all, if they ignored him the first time, whats to say they wont just ignore him a second time.
I bet you’d whinge like hell if someone sat in your kids bedroom for 6 hours while they were at school puffing away. Why is his complaint any less valid because he’s an adult?

little bit differant that, its not his truck so he has no choice really, and as an ex smoker he should understand more than a none smoker

The thing is, it’s not that different is it? You could argue that a childs bedroom belongs to the mortgage company or landlord so that would make it OK.
I’m not a born again ex-smoker who thinks everone should stop just because I have. What I dont want is to sit somewhere for 10-12 hours that stinks of a smell I thought I got rid of when I quit. And yes, at the time I didn’t think I smelt of smoke, it was just the other smokers.

No, you aren’t exempt when driving a foreign registered truck in the UK.
In the same way as you can use the UKs 60mph speed limit on motorways in the UK, you are also subject to the Smoking in a Workplace Law as implemented in the UK.
In countries where Smoking in the Workplace Law doesn’t include a truck cab, you can smoke.
I’m a smoker, I drive to Europe where smoking isn’t banned in the cab. I therefore smoke in my cab when I’m abroad. Prove the smell of cigarette smoke in my cab is caused by illegal smoking in the UK.

The Smoking in a Workplace Law is due to an EU directive, but the actual Laws are made by each individual country. In the UK, there were guidelines published explaining how the laws were to be implemented. A truck cab was explicitly mentioned as being a work place. Strangely company cars were also explicitly mentioned as not being a workplace.

Simon:

Thats only company cars that have one driver and not pool cars. The very same wording is what allows Harry Monk to legally smoke in his truck.
