Smoking at an rdc

In the course of my duties i tend to go to various supermarket rdc’s. Every single one apart from the last one has let me go for a smoke in thier smoking area. I might of had to had my fob in to get a gate pass or press a bell for security to let me through.

The other night i went to one on the south coast i had a full load and they were busy tipping others that got thier before me so it was going to be a while. I asked the goods in where thier smoking area was and was told “it doesnt matter your your supposed to wait here not wander around the yard” to whuch my responce was “well you better get in touch with whoever then because i walked from my truck to here unaided.” At this point the other bod piped up and told me where the smoking area was.

Has anyone had this before??

No, never ever. Although could be because I don’t smoke! Some of these threads.

Some people are helpful, some are awkward? Just normal life for most people in most jobs.

.
If you think that dealing with awkward office staff is bad, try dealing with awkward drivers!

I saw a guy smoking in his lorry on Friday and just hoped he doesn’t share it with another driver. I’m so glad our drivers (very few smoke) do not smoke in the cab.

Was it Tesco in Nursling by any chance? I got sacked from there in 2002 for throwing a handful of mushrooms at another warehouse OP. Gross Misconduct.

Truck cab generally is a workplace, and so it is illegal to smoke in the cab, not just bad manners

Unfortunately that law Is non existent to many companies. When coca cola closed down and I was tuped and started working from a van, the company we worked for all the managers etc smoked so didn’t give a ■■■■ about the smoking law.
Relief drivers would smoke in my van and reporting it did nothing. People would smoke in the warehouse. I refused to fill machines in many premises as I would get there and they would all be smoking inside the building. Often I would turn up and say sorry I can’t work in here and then I they would complain to the ops manager who would then tell me to go back there.
Usually scaffolding lorries, groundwork/builders vans, tradesmen etc all smoke inside their vehicles with multiple passengers.
Most pubs in Southampton (well all the ones along Shirley high street and those kind of pubs) the drinkers stand inside but by the door smoking. The law is a complete arse. No one abides by it despite it being law for 15 years.

I even had people smoke on the buses, one woman was smoking a crack pipe Infront of parents with children. I just let them carry on because I was to avoid confrontation and if I’d have kicked her off she would likely have received free travel as an apology.

Try some self control, most blokes if they don’t smoke like a pint or ■■■ , you don’t hear them asking to pop home & sort the mrs out do you

All our trucks are smoking permitted. Great for me as I’m a heavy smoker.

Surprising.
You`re in the UK? Dedicated vehicle for each driver?

If I’m given a lorry that has been smoked in, I’d refuse to drive it!!!

Wtf are you on about now?
The guy just wants a cigarette & already said he doesn’t smoke in the cab which is a dam sight more self control than the average smoker has.

It’s not too much to ask to be directed to the smoking place without an attitude now is it.

Yes. A few.

Coop at junction 28 M1 wouldn’t let me once upon a time.

DHL/Argos Darlington also.

Various that have such a long walk to get to such as Nisa Scunthorpe, Tesco Goole, Argos off of the A38, tesco Boro.

I just go and stand behind a trailer or smoke in the cab if I’m being kept their for hours against my will.

Tesco Boro when it was waiting in the waiting room I just popped down the stairs and round the corner and had one there, nobody complained/noticed.

If they are going to treat you like a prisoner/juvenile …

Yes Manchester based. No dedicated vehicles, can be a different unit each night or the same one all week.
I should add, if I worked at a firm with dedicated vehicles and was given a unit in which the usual driver didn’t smoke then I wouldn’t.

Exactly. Tesco Donny have some nice benches just outside the waiting room, ideal for sitting out smoking in the summer. Never had anything said.

Then, as I understand it, that is illegal. No smoking in the workplace is UK law.
There can exemptions if only one person ever drives a vehicle, but since mechanics have to get in the cab, even that is questionable.
Saying the company allows it is like saying, the company allows 50tons, or 70mph. Maybe they say nowt, but they cant` exempt themselves from the law.

"Smoking in work vehicles
Smoking isn’t allowed in any work vehicle that more than one person uses, eg:

taxis
buses
vans
goods vehicles used by more than one driver
company cars used by more than one employee
A worker can smoke in a company car that only they use if their employer agrees."

I agree.
I don’t smoke myself,.but they should provide facilities for lads that do .

They are,.or were before Covid, like ■■■■ penal holding pens those ‘drivers waiting rooms’ places (rdc.s) I hate em.
