HI EVERYBODY just got alan spillets excelent 2011 calendar -look whats in-0 sorry about camera distortion

just seen this,it looks like its taken from a photo,my motor me driving, and its MD910,an 8lxb.
and it looks like a load of bp plastic pellets on the trailer.

Hi loader8,
It was posted on the 8LXB thread, but Dennis and the gang still wouldn’t believe it.I know Alan Spillett personally and he only paints pictures from original photo’s or from actually seeing a vehicle.
Cheers Dave.

It is well known Dave that the description "poetic licence"applies to artists as well! Considering that SOM “cornered” the market for 8LXB Big Js there really should be some photographic evidence surely! unless,of course, they are just figments of a fertile imagination!!Dennis.

hiya,
Don’t forget the BRS had more Big Js than anybody else and it’s strange that none of the supposed 240s did’nt make it into their ranks, had there been any they would have been offered them, they did buy in the hundreds.
thanks harry long retired.

Still can’t have been as many as SOM “H” otherwise BRS would have 1 or 2 of the hundreds of 8LXBs Guy produced! Dennis.

Exaggeration will get you no where Dennis :exclamation:  .

I hope our new mate “loader8” realises what a “rats nest” he has walked into!! and he dosen’t take the thread too seriously! If its given–it must, and will, be taken!!! The gospel according to “Saint Dave the Renegade” and accepted by his many followers!

nah i,m not a serious guy bewick,i just came across your posts here and thought ,how do these people not know about guys with 240 gardners, seddons as well with 240,s even seddon atkinsons and erf,s.
they were so common at maddiston it never crossed my mind that they were not meant to be.
speaking to one of our other drivers yesterday he was telling me about the time in a layby with his guy j4t when an american drew in behind him and proceeded to tell him he was amazed to see the 8 cylinder in a lorry and then took as many photos still expressing his amazement at a marine engine in the lorry.you need to get a hold of that american ,he took pictures from all angles.
i,m not kidding you on,they were common ,as from 1975 till i got my first sleeper cab in 1984,which was an erf with a 320 ■■■■■■■■■■■ on that fotki place, its the white one with the concrete pipes on,A907DFS and its MD1282.)every motor i had was fitted with an 8 cylinder gardner engine.
as i said before, hope it helps.

I recorded a program off the T.V. a few weeks back, about Motorways ,and the effect on on the transport and the nation as a whole.

Got around to looking at it last night, and there was some film footage of the M6, late '60’s early ‘70’s, and in to view came a Smiths AEC Mandator, followed by a Guy Big J, with a 33’ Boden trl, then I then a four wheeler ( possibly a Bedford) I watched it in slow - mo, and it’s the first time I’ve ever seen S.O.M. on film.
The soundtrack was a bit muffled, but I could have sworn that the Guy had the 8 XLB !!! … :smiling_imp: :unamused: :unamused:

I’m gonna save it for prosperity…

Loader8, no it wont help at all I’m afraid! If “certain folk” were knocked down by an 8 cylinder Big J they would be still checking the length of the sump as it passed over them while they drew their final breath,… and would STILL journey into the afterlife unbelieving! :unamused:

Pete.

nicely put

Hi if you go to brian edgars fotki site he has a load of smith of maddiston photos,He has one of the best sites for trucks old &new from all over the world,I stay in falkirk not far from the depot in maddiston and remember these trucks, there were two of smiths drivers that stayed in the same village as me ,(jimmy mc,noughton) (Alan patton) (Jackie Dormer & his son Harold who was his brake man) came from Stirling, I drove petrol tankers with Harold for years and he used to tell me about smiths drivers on there way south, going over Shap (round many corners as it was known). I used to stop at the jungle cafe with harold where he would tell me about the job back then.

Do’es anyone remember a driver called Alex Stoddart, this would be around the early 60s,I think he ran out of Maddison and sometimes stopped over at Brough, big mate of my Dads, who was mechanicing for Watty Sayer at the time,I used to call in the garage after school and then go home,
Mother would ask “wheres yer Dad,”, Errrr,Wellll,He’s having a quiet drink :unamused: with Alex,Well that was it,dinner in the bin,and a bit of verbal exchange between them the next morning,

Last i heard,he started up on his own over Middlesbrough way,As i say this would be early around the 60s to early 70s,Smashing bloke,as they all were

Yes indeed.

He was manager of Doncaster depot (Arksey) when I worked for SoM in Stockton ('67-68) and I believe took over as manager there after the death of Alf Darley.

Unlike some of his management compatriots, he was a real good lad.
