Smith of Maddiston

Sorry but we have closed for Christmas! GONE TO LAPLAND!!! Dennis.

Now then lads,I’ve just got myself kitted out in full SAS combat gear(corpral 1st class with Bar)ready for the onslaught which as we get closer to a "real photo"being posted, the shot and shell coming my way will be horendeous! I guess there’ll even be long range missile strikes from Brittany and the Isle of Man I fear! have you seen the size of that rocket Chris Webb is dying to launch? Anyway just so as you understand that I won’t be waving the white flag just yet I think that if I “bunged” that artist he should be able to doctor this shot of one of the Bewick Big Js and put the right Badge on the grille!!!Dennis.

hiya,
Dennis if I was you I’d get in touch our Keith (Dessert Driver) he’s got a very tidy Scania which is capable of being armour plated you’ll be safe enough in that, just keep your head down and bring a bottle or two of single malt, cos i might need to join you i still don’t think one exists.
thanks harry long retired.

Take it easy,

Rgds to all,

Have you ever tried getting “blood out of a stone” Dave? The old slappers down Leman St.never managed it so how come you think I would have any more success? Actually we were in town to-day and saw this beautiful half Stilton,so Anne says "you arn’t still hoping that the Brie will turn up are you"I said well Fergie is “reputed”(reputed is the operative word as it has never been proven yet!)to have sent it! We came home with the Stilton!! Cheers Dennis.

When I was shunting at Smiths, we’d load 10 or 12 trailers a day out of Weymouth Quay. Great time, sun, sea, and plenty of young ladies to keep us from being bored !! We’d pull the wagons / trailers off the quay, then rope and sheet them on the sea front after we loaded the last one, the front being all cordoned off for that purpose. Don’t think it would happen to-day, very cramped dockside, and people wandering about all over the place.
Sometimes, if we were late loading, the night men would come down by car, and take the wagons on from there, we’d go back by car, but had to stop off for a pint on the way back to the yard, as I didn’t drink, guess who got to drive…long days though, from 7.00 till may-be 8 or 9 at night…

Hya Dave, hope you had a good Christmas mate.
I never did the shunting from Weymouth, it was always load and go for me…to Scotch…even on a Saturday as i mentioned
previously on this thread.
I remember one particular day i had loaded off the ship and pulled off the quayside, did a sharp left onto the seafront road
against the kerb to rope and sheet.Trouble was i,d got a bit too close to the kerb and with the camber of the road somehow managed to
wedge the load of tomatoes against a lampost.
Well i was a nipper then and could,nt go forward or back without damaging the load.
Jimmy Carlin managed to move it for me without too much harm done.

I also remember one particular day when a certain driver, mentioning no names ( now resides in France though )
spent too many hours on the beach and ended up looking like a lobster. :unamused: :unamused:

Yep, nice Xmas Tone, will send you an e-mail soon, must have a chat !!

The beach at Weymouth. Ummmmmmmmmmmmm I remember a girl from Manchester who had these huge… :unamused:

I remember Mickey Stamp trying to toss off Ivor Trueman’s little Jack Russell on the back of a '40ft trailer on the quay side, at the back of one of the hotels. An old biddy walked by and asked him what he was doing, the dog was shaking a bit at the time…half an hour a later a copper turns up, and say’s it might be better to keep the dog in the cab for a bit, it’s up-setting the tourists !!.. Good old days !!

Hi loader8,
It was posted on the 8LXB thread, but Dennis and the gang still wouldn’t believe it.I know Alan Spillett personally and he only paints pictures from original photo’s or from actually seeing a vehicle.
Cheers Dave.

It is well known Dave that the description "poetic licence"applies to artists as well! Considering that SOM “cornered” the market for 8LXB Big Js there really should be some photographic evidence surely! unless,of course, they are just figments of a fertile imagination!!Dennis.

hiya,
Don’t forget the BRS had more Big Js than anybody else and it’s strange that none of the supposed 240s did’nt make it into their ranks, had there been any they would have been offered them, they did buy in the hundreds.
thanks harry long retired.
