Smelly heating/ air con Any tips?

Ive got a 19 plate volvo FH 500 about 6 months back and the blower stinks when you first get it going its like dirty nappies it does die down after about 10 mins but then there is still a linger its really annoying as you know we pretty much spend all day in the cab and to have it stinking aint good especially this time of year.

I told my employer and they got it valeted but its still there every morning ewwww, I dont really want to go back to them as it was like pulling teeth to get them to look at it before.

Ive tried all sorts ive got loads of air fresheners one of those atomisers that you put oil in and also tried a can of that air con cleaner which lasted about 24 hours to no avail the smell always sits on top of the fragrance if you get what I mean.

There must be some other drivers who have had this issue with smelling blower/ air con any tips on how to rid it for good.

Has the HEVAC air filter been replaced?
If that is mucky it will taint all air coming into, and recirculating in the cab.

It should be part of routine maintenance…but…

^^^ this, cabin filters should be changed at least annually.

Yes, get an A/C cleaner from Halfords (other car spares outlets are available), and follow the printed instructions. The smell is bacteria that builds up naturally in the system.
And the solution to this problem is…wait for it…run the A/C in Auto mode 12 months per year, or put simply…leave it switched ON.
This advice is usually printed in the vehicle handbook.

Good advice actually. Also it never hurts to run the night heater a couple of times a week even in the height of summer.

Thanks for the tips.

I looked at the filter and at first it looked brand new i removed it and the mechanics have just turned it around so basically the dirty side was blowing into the cab, i turned it around but made no difference so ive just removed it altogether and its made a massive difference.

I dont get the blast of smell in the morning now.

Personally i cant understand why the in-house mechanics wouldnt just change it they are about £10 and probably cheaper for them on a trade account.

Switch recirculted air off especially in summer

So, the old filter is most probably blocked. It might not appear so to the eye, but you have shown it is blocked.
If you run for a long time without a filter, then all the stuff the filter has trapped will end up inside the cab or be deposited inside the air trunking. Over time this will start to smell…
Renew the filter. Run with a new filter in, rather than without one at all. If replaced as it should be, the filter is doing a good job.
