I try to obey speed limits. A long time ago i got a speeding fine and may get one in the future. There is much discussion on this forum about speed. Have you ever heard of anyone being prosecuted for going too slowly? Is there a law about …“failing to make proper headway”? Has anyone been prosecuted for “obstruction” because they are traveling too slowly?
I would say yes to that not that I can recall any instances, but too slow on a motorway obviously is dangerous and not keeping up close to the speed limit on a driving test counts as a minor.
If my memory serves me correctly, I was watching a police program a few years ago and there was an older gent driving at 25mph on the motorway, police pulled him he didnt get fined but he got a stern talking to.
LOL best one i saw was the old woman that decided to take her mobility scooter on the motorway as she took a wrong turn! LOL
Too slow without reason = inconsiderate driving or DWDCaT
Saw emergency bikers recently where two vehicles were pulled for going too slowly but only warnings given - the office did say he could have prosecuted but decided to educate instead
Well, you can fail yer test “for failing to make satisfactory progress”.
I like the way some people on here seen to think that they are above the law, when they reckon that you will get pulled for doing 40 on a straight road with a hundred cars/trucks behind you, just because they want to break the law & fly along at 56.
I stick to speed limits 40, 50 &. 56 as much as possible, don’t drive at 25 unless I’m on a bend & I won’t keep stopping in every layby to let the ‘impatient stay in beds’ & would be Lewis Hamilton ‘Class 1 Drivers’ by (did they get their Class 1s from the Silverstone HGV Driving School)
If our wonderful Elected Government upped the speed limits on major A roads I would keep to the new limit but until then I value my licence too much to risk it.
If you are driving at 30 on a 40 mph road I reckon you should let the traffic jams pass you. But 40 in a 40 crack on & cause mayhem behind you, perhaps then the government will listen to the arguments (or maybe not !)
Safe legal reasonable progress is what is being discussed which, in normal circumstances, all drivers should be capable of doing
Its falling below those standards which is of concern
Hi there
Confession time…
I have been fined for going too slowly.
I was in a Bedford TK on the French autoroute, trundling along happily at 40mph at 11pm, Gendarmerie ■■■■■■ me off at the next junction and give me a Fixed Penalty of 20€.
Never mind, but lesson learnt!
Cheers
Paul

Random rant of the day award goes too…
Surely, taking the argument the government are always bleating to us that ‘speed kills’ it should be impossible to be done for going too slow.
Following their OWN argument that the faster you go the more dangerous it is, the slower you go the safer it is.
At least, that was the argument they used when they installed 20mph limits on a few of the local roads around here.
And yes, I know it depends on circumstances. But that is the point. The argument is not just about the speed but the context.
And that’s the bit the authorities have yet to understand.

I dont knock people for doing 40 but just say you were on the a1 going south would you honestly sit at 40 after all the short dauls with 30 odd cars and lorries backed up behind you until you got to newcastle without stopping to let them pass?
Yes, I would if it single carriageway and safe to do so. I wouldn’t stop other people overtaking me though as long as they don’t cut in too early and try and take my cab off (Billy Bowie Tankers !!).

I just keep doing 40 on the short duals to give people a chance to overtake, I’m not one of these Knobs who speed up to 56 just to stop other wagons overtaking.
I just think we should make a point of doing 40 mph on all single carriage ways, then maybe the people in control of our lives will have a look at the hold ups & suicide jockeys who insist on overtaking in ridiculous places.
I had a few near misses on the A421 today between Oxford & Swindon around 08.30 this morning, loads of Commuters who leave it till the last minute to get up then rush about thinking they can do 90mph in the morning. Sorry Mr Commuter- the laws the Law & ‘The Man’ says I can only do 40 mph what ever the time of day & I’ve got a Forward Facing Camera for any evidence when you happen to have a head on because you’re in a hurry to get past me.
& just for the record, I carried on doing 40 on the 2 silly little dual carriage way sections of that road. Maybe they should build another 2 mile section of dual carriage way near Farringdon to stop the traffic backing up ?

How long ago was that?
Because the TK wasnt around much when the euro came out, France was still in francs
Got pulled on the M6 once! On our way to marshall at the RAC Rally in the eighties, four-up with wellies, flasks, etc, in Dad’s 1300 Beetle, a gutless wonder. Climbing past Burton at 5 in the morning, passing a pair of lorries in Lane 1, calculated (correctly) that lorry 2 was overhauling lorry 1, I pulled into lane 3, all of us going really slow, no-one for miles. From miles back though, the Old Bill turned up (they must’ve been tanking along) for a chat. Finding nothing untoward, they let us go on our merry (slow) way.

The law doesn’t prevent you from pulling over into a layby every now and again when possible. When it starts to get crazy out there with folk taking risks have a think for one minute why that is.
As a HGV driver you have a duty to reduce the impact your vehicle is causing to yourselves and others.
Tosco driver on the m5 Tuesday morning doîn 40 mph causing havoc. , wtf is wrong with these people ? Do they seriously have to drag the job out to that extent ? Down rite dangerous u plonker !!!
