As above takes ages to start and is generally slow does anyone no of any free tune up software available looked on line but they say free but they scan then as you to register and pay cheers
Try AVAST. It’s free and I’ve used for ages. No probs.
Use this to clear all the crap from your machine:
Make sure you download the free version, no ads or anything, it is safe. When installing untick the boxes asking you to install toolbars etc.
Run it without ticking any more of the boxes, just click run.
Then download and run this:
Again make sure you have the free version, this will take probably hours to run at first but you can still use your computer while it runs, it tidies all the file system for you. This will run in the background for you keeping things tidy.
Now install this:
Probably the best free anti virus/malaware, no popup ads or anything that slows your machine. It just works quietly.
I agree with brados about CCleaner and MS Security Essentials, but to be honest you might as well use the Windows defrag programme and schedule it to run every week or two depending on how much you use the laptop.
I’ve never really found any advantage in using third party defrag programmes, but that may be just me who knows

Hi t,
its just that defraggler runs a deeper and very much faster scan than windows own tool, while windows defrag may take 1 hour defraggler takes 5 minutes and will run continuously in the background keeping the place tidy. In short its 10 x better
Defraggin will only benefit a serveral years old computer, that has had loads of use. Running it weekly will only wear the hard drive out quicker. And if your hard drive is SSD, then NEVER defrag it. Doing so will kill the hard drive.
As already mentioned, crapcleaner (or ccleaner as it is now called) is a good bet.
The best option will be to either reinstall windows, or use the factory reset option. But back up all the stuff you want to keep first.
Computers will get slow over time. There is no real top end cure for it other than starting again. Using these cleaning programs may only get you a 1% increase in speed. Most I have seen is 10%. (18 years of building my own computers, building computers for others, and repairing computers)
Dowoad and run CCleaner. Delete all the ■■■■■ in the background of your operating system. Download and run AVAST. Job done
Run Malwarebytes Anti Malware (free) too
A few variables can come into play, how old is the laptop?
Older machines generally run less RAM (RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY) and an older version of RAM, also they fill up with newer programs that are RAM hungry this can cause issues with speed.
This is also the same with the processor, older processors can not keep up with the demands of newer programs.
Is the hard drive full or near full?
Its not all bad as you can keep the laptop for media playing in your truck once its cleaned out
That is of course if none of the suggestions above can help
I have no idea why I typed RAM in caps
I deal with lots of comps and brados hits it on the head, ccleaner and run a csan with anti malwarebytes free version, it will remove all of the adware as well as spyware that will slow your comp down that other anti v’s ignore
also drift is correct, if its a single core cpu and you have under 4gb ram you need an upgrade
free for Mac
just had mine sorted.wasnt enough ram so thats been put upto 2 gig now and hardrive is a brand new (no moving parts type) one.
fast as anything now ,well happy for £80.
New Websites needs lots of ram. Even my new Toshiba was after 6 Month already often slow. Restarting helped. 8 Gb Ram would be enough i think, but my old Mac G4 was already faster.
Got me now a free Version of alwarebytes and after a Scan run the Toshiba as new. Bought me now Full Version for £20.-
malwarebytes.org/premium/?u … racking=cj
Errrr,…
Buy the Disc too! Just £5.- or so
When you get the Disc restart from it,which will then scan without Window running,so every Malware can’t protect itself anymore. But,dont make yourself a Disc on a affected Computer
