You would think all these gits that are stockpiling were the lowest of the low, think again, I have just been told that my options are, give notice and be paid 4 weeks notice pay and holidays accrued, or unpaid leave until this is over, because a competitor in the San me business, has contacted customers of ours and undercut our prices so much, that all 6 of us are virtually jobless now, the sneaky barsteward is David Watson Transport, he is undercutting the container HIAB business, I hope he goes under the count.
If they are undercutting by an amount big enough for customers to move then they are either doing this at loss (Stobies style) or your boss needs to recheck their costs / pricing.
I wouldn’t be surprised however if they are doing it at a loss and hoping the gov will pay 75% of wages to cover the losses. Your boss should be able to do the same once its up and running and keep you on, assuming they can gey other contracts.
Big problem if this lot are doing this vs just plain undercutting or being more competitive is when the gov cash stops, they would have to cover the shortfall and make a profit off a much smaller amount.
Is redundancy less than the 4 weeks money (ignoring holiday pay)? If no job, should be able to get that if you worked long enough. Plus either redundancy or 4 weeks pay still lets you go back if it picks up…or look for a better job.
Never go out with nothing on any loyalty. That doesn’t pay the bills.
Oh and ADR - its keeping me busy currently esp on pallets. Farmers going nuts for their stuff and all the stuff for that thing you might have heard about in the news.

Tge gov? THE GOV will pay? How? The gov’t has no money, lol. They’ll borrow it (so we have to repay) or tax it out of us
(sorry OP, couldn’t resist … my advice is try supermarket/any food distribution/supply work…This is why IMO it’s important to let companies fail as in the case of the Stobart and the one that undercut you…can’t run up a debt to sustain unprofitable contracts and when the bill comes due cry to the gov’t OH BUT THE JOBS…well what about all the jobs you ■■■■■■■ destroyed by running an uneconomical operation)
Money isn’t going to be any help - if you’re not allowed to go out and spend it by the time you get it.
It isn’t “stockpiling” that is the problem - it is access to food, drink, and utilities. Once the utilities fail - we’re ALL in the crap - big time.
Who’s been stocking up with Torches, Candles, batteries, etc?
Toilet Paper won’t do you much good - once the water goes off…
Stockpiled food in the freezer - won’t do you much good when the power goes off…
Cash in the bank, finally granted by the government - won’t do you much good if you get shot for venturing out to buy some food once martial law is declared…
People driving 4x4’s - are the ones most likely to be “out and about” - just as they might want to lie low, and refrain from being out with an effective big target painted on their backs eh?
…Eventually, anyone driving a van, truck, or anything else looking like it might have “essential supplies” on it - is a target for attack - the final nail in the coffin for law & order.
The only thing different from the unfolding scenario and something like “Threads” - is that you don’t get that initial spike in deaths from “Thermal Damage” let’s say.
“Secondary Damage” - always ends up killing more people than anything else in such a global crisis - possibly even larger than WWII which saw many countries around the world - immune to the effects of world wars…

You need to take that tin foil hat off, stop looking at all the conspiracy theorist web pages, and get out more.

Somebody needs to spend less time watching TV.
Maybe if more watched some serious TV, rather than zombie and mad Max movies wed be better off? And Brietbart, Fox News, etc, doesnt qualify as serious in my book.

That is not how it’s meant to work. The 75% of wages is for people who have been laid off and are not working not to cover wages of people who continue to work. Companies using this scheme to undercut contracts will be acting fraudulently and will hopefully suffer the legal consequences.

But when companies such as Walmart have been operating just this kind of policy in the US for years now and none seems outraged.
How about farming subsidies?
Selfish people like cheap stuff and dont care to look too deeply in how they get it.

Well, I like cheap stuff e.g. a £1 ex-Xmas t-shirt from ASDA thus depriving, ulitimately, Alice Walton (at last count worth $45 billion) of a tiny amount and not harming the maker any more, but I consider myself able to donate to charities more because of that. Also I wouldn’t say e.g. Roman Abramovich is not selfish and yet, apart from from bargain mineral rights in the 90s, I bet he doesn’t go for much cheap stuff, so there!

It really is time to seriously look at Universal Basic Incomes.
And the tax havens in the Crown Dependencies.
And offshoring profits.
And political lobbyists.
And self-regulating banking.
And I could go on and on but one thing I am certain of, the top tiers of the pyramid are undoubtedly profiting from this latest fiasco whilst the many at the bottom will be once again, invited to carry the cost.

Eh?
The wage guarantee scheme was only announced yesterday and has nothing to do with the US or farm subsidies.

There are things going on other than this virus thing.
Walmart is the first company I thought of that uses government handouts to subsidise its low wage business model.
They even go as far as to advise new “associates” how to access these benefits upon their induction.
Along with not supplying a uniform, I mean why waste good profits on clothing when you can simply make them wear out their own.
Nothing to do with the virus, just symptomatic of a wider abuse by “slimey barstools”

Inevitable I reckon in a world where jobs are increasingly either becoming insecure (gig economy/zero hour contracts) or automated and taken out of human hands altogether.
It will get to a point where work can no longer be considered a reliable means of people having an income that supports them.

Probably need UBI sometime, due to changing work patterns and automation, now (ish) might provide that watershed moment?
