Skips and roro drivers

driven roro dragon and wag for the last 7 years ,steady away :sunglasses:

Anyone worked for Aldermaston Skips? They’re undercutting Oxfordshire firms for Oxfordshire work at the moment.

What’s it like with the drag on it? I’d say you’d need a fair amount of room and patience.

We do a lot of bakery waste, as in bread and dough which we mill into animal foods.

Really dense stuff and can be a pain if it’s not been rammed into the skip. A load of dough sat on the rear end can make it fun loading the skip as well as driving it. Stan

Does make you question your sanity

Done it for a couple of years, always remember doing the bins at Tiptree jam, they were full of empty fruit puree sachets which had to be sheeted (no easy sheet) and a lot of spillage happened there.
Had to tape up the bottom of your trousers otherwise the wasps got up there, got stung loads of times !!.Really enjoyed my time on roro though.

Does the skip on the drag go on from the rear? Youse must spend a lot of the day dropping trailer loading/unloading skip re hitching trailer, etc. What is the advantage of extending the drawbar?

it needs a small country to turn around in but it follows well, and the drag will take up to 14 t comfortably total net 20 t,it reverses brilliantly ,but i think thats more down to driver skill :sunglasses: , the drag loads from the front ,hence the retractable d bar and t b h we do distance runs so we might only drop once or twice a day,its a hard life but someones got to do it

Exactly!! Thanks for info

Do the obligatory lumps of scrap behind the cab/infront of skip fall foul of the new insecure load rules? They don’t around here; Saw a granny shopping trolley and a kids’ scooter stowed in said manner today.

I’m on roro at the moment on artics, been doing it for 4 years. Money’s very good, although a lot of hard graft and shovelling involved. We do a lot of bakery waste, as in bread and dough which we mill into animal foods.

I bet you only do it coz you knead the dough.

Have driven this from new. And yes it takes an airfield to turn it round but ok when you get used to it

I used to do skips a while back and found it a very thankless task

My hat goes off to any of you boys
I found you were more loading , unloading or having a tear up with the site manager than driving

The best comrade I had on the skips was a tower crane driver , I never met , but was spot on with unloading the lorry and could nearon plant a loaded skip on the back of the lorry

Any skip drivers had a builder build a wall where you dropped the skip ?

Or better still had a trench dug between you and the skip your picking up ?

This is the unit I drive once or twice a week when the other driver is busy on site. It’s rear steer and lift on the truck with supper singles on the front for a 9 tonne axle and front lift on the trailer. Very manoverable and we can also fit 2 x bins or 2 x 20 ft containers on it as its got front twist locks.

Boom boom !! :unamused: :unamused:
If i had a £1 for every time i heard that joke
 I’d have £43.76p :grimacing:

I’ve been doing skip/roro work for my firm now for the last year and half. I absolutely love it, but that being said all we do is metal so don’t tend to get too messy, but it can still have its days.

A few pics from my phone

This tends to annoy me as we don’t charge for our bins, order a bigger one ffs, i hate having to sheet or strap !!!

I thought you charged for “dirty scrap” like re’ wire from demolition companies?

Used ot do it years ago, loved the job, worked for my local council on skips and roros though prefered roros. used to be a set run everyday, 1 bin of glass to a glass recycling place, then to a transfer station, drop the bin outside then the rest of my shift consisted of taking 2 40 yard bins to a paper recycler and change a few waste boxes aswell. ten pick up the glass bin and take it back to the yard with me

sometimes i did landfill stuff, even worked the recycling centre thats attached to our landfill
hard work, 27 bins emptied in 8 hours. the smeel is quite bad though on landfill stuff, also the money wasnt amazing but i was happy enough with it
