Skip driving?

Hi guys. New to the forum and just looking for a bit of advise. I’m in the process of doing my Cat C. I currently do drainage and have been doing it for 13 years. Can’t stand the job anymore and need a change. I’m only 34 but my back is knackered from digging all day every day. I’m interested in getting into Skip driving. I have a friend who does it and says he loves it but I just wanted to hear what others thought about the job. Is it true a lot of companies will take on new drivers? What sort of pay should I expect? Do you enjoy or did you enjoy the job when you did it? Any drivers or former skip drivers on here that could offer any advise would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum. The great bonus with skips is that you’re home at night and don’t normally start at silly o’clock. The downside is that the money isn’t great as a rule. Skips is an established start to a trucking career though some choose to stay with it for years - so it aint that bad!

Also sent you a pm.

All the best, Pete

Thanks for the quick reply. Being home at night is what I’m looking for as I have a wife and young daughter. I’m not interested the long haul stuff. I quite like the idea of working for a builders merchants driving a hgv with Hiab. I’m going to get my Hiab after passing my Cat C so I have that bit extra behind me.

Sounds like a plan.

All the best with it, Pete

Try the likes of Travis Perkins/CCF. Pay and hours are ok. TP use hiabs. CCF use Moffetts.

I did 2 weeks for a skip company through agency £10 p/h.

Full time staff were on minimum wage  more fool them idiots

Who ever was paying you to do that must be daft! Or plain stupid, if I was running a business the driver would be getting payed for hours worked, and would be doing more than 4 trips a day lol. I think you have tarted the job description up a bit or maybe you have been smoking something? I do between 7-10 jobs on a good day, I might do 4 on the day we break up for Xmas! Give us a bit more detail on what you had to do then, how did you manage to get paid for 48 hrs when ya only done 40

No exaggeration at all it was a multi nation company with around 6000 uk employees my hours were 6-3:45 weekdays but all the drivers went home at 3 pm but still payed until 3:45 & we were payed for 3 hours on a sat morning but mostly didn’t need to work them but still got payed, got 25 days holiday + bank holidays & full sick pay from first day of sickness

yup  sounds about right …recon I know who you worked for.
