Last week driven lorry with Siemens tachograph unit.
2 times stuck in a traffic, according to tachograph display when stopping in traffic for 5-20 sec it goes into other work mode as normal and I ended in services for 45 min rest at 4 hours 22 minutes.
Whoever I notice no “other work” mode on the printout, all driving time and my total driving time 4 hours 38 minutes. But with no doubt I do remember according to tachograph display I stop in services at 4 hours 22 minutes.
Tachograph fault?
How should I explain that to vosa, happens 2 times last week?

If you get stopped in traffic for 5 to 20 seconds that’s not called being stuck in traffic it’s called driving, being stuck for 20 minutes is called being stuck in traffic
If you stop for a few seconds the tachograph display may show other work but if it’s a type 1 tachograph it will record the whole minute as driving, if it’s a type 2 tachograph it will record the whole minutes as whatever activity took up the major part of the minute, which means it would record a stop of a few seconds as driving.
If you did 4 hours 38 minutes driving there’s no reason why the display would show 4 hours 22 minutes.
As for how you would explain it to a DVSA bod, well you could say the tachograph is faulty and get fined for knowingly using a faulty tachograph, or you could just accept that you made a mistake and be more careful in future

If the tachograph displayed 4 hours 22 minutes driving then that is what you did. Driving time for the regulations is the time recorded by the tachograph, if It’s a Type 1 unit then it may have ticked over a couple of extra minutes but still nothing to worry about.
