Are all Shunter (Terberg) training courses run through companies on their own premises?
If I wanted to train as a shunter are courses available without having to go through a company?
Toying with the idea of diversifying to keep things interesting and it would also be nice to have the security of having something as a back up plan to the driving.
Is there a qualification for shunter driving?, half an hour in a Terberg with an experienced driver showing you and you’ve got it, but never let such a thing get in the way of someone coming up with a nice little kerching load of ■■■■■■■■ training scheme eh.
The learning bit comes with putting all the various routines and trailer operations required at depot level into action, and that can only be learned on site under supervision/instruction.
I trained on the Terburg and spent a day with a shunter but basically within an hour I was well up to speed, it’s also a very easy thing to manoeuvre due to steering lock, visibility and power. What took a day or two to learn was all the procedures like what trailers to put where
and lots of other do’s and don’t’s with regards to the way the whole operation works and liaising with warehouse and office bods.
Anyway never heard of any outside training course .
Coates training of Leicester used to do a shunter licence. I done mine on site at a gypsum factory. Pretty easy and straightforward. Half a day if I remember right.
There never used to be a license for shunters and I doubt there is now. Most shunters jobs are done by experienced lorry drivers so no real need for training.
It is very easy to pick up though. As I said on another thread I trained car drivers with no lorry experience and they only got one day between two and they were ready to go. ( well 95% were.) The odd one had to have a little extra practice the next day.
Lever to raise/lower fifth wheel, button to press to release fifth wheel, taps on the air lines, button to go forward, button to go backwards. Oh and where oil and water is and thats about it.
As Juddian said, most of it is learning the operations at the place you are shunting which no course other than one done at that individual site can teach.
Had training at Tesco. Twice.
First Trainer came from outside, telling me our Shunters are Idiots. So i sent them Home.
Wot,he ask. I told em if there is an Idiot then is it him.
So,Problem solved.
But i was wrong.
Got another Trainer (our own) who was happy that i protected his Shunters. Had the Training in 30 minutes
Think its differend if you havent a Class 2 License. Otherwise just the Tug and who has power to order you wot you doing.
Tug is differend from HGV.
Its Automatic, but if you put it into Gear and leave Brakes it speeds off. So keep on Neutral when not driving.
There is an accredited course done by the CITB in Northern Ireland, I know because I done it. 2 days training followed by a half day in the classroom. At the end of the course you get a license approved by Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) because Shunter Tugs are actually classed as a construction vehicle by DVLA.
I know because I applied for the job but to drive a tug on the docks you need this license.
