Don’t think you’re right about the no meal voucher, last time I was there I got one for £9, it’s a Roadchef and they always let you have the option of with or without.
But I have to agree with you regarding the disgusting toilets. The shower is cordoned off more than it is open, I complained about it and was told to go use the one in the ladies.
Some time ago, they let you go to the “DaysInn” next door as long as you had paid for parking, don’t think they let you now though.
Was in there one morning, just for a loo-break, out of the dozen cubicles , half of them had no toilet paper, the other half that did have some, had excrement all over the pans, hence why there was paper in them I presume. I complained to the duty manager , once I’d found him, only to be told that the cleaner hadn’t come in yet 
Now seeing that this MSA is on the main route to the Channel ports and it serves both northbound and southbound , you would think that with all the foreign coaches that stop there, they would like to give a good impression of the country the tourists are coming to visit
Over here free showers are collected on a points card. Everytime you fill up a shower gets added. The showers are like a private bathroom that are cleaned once used and fresh towels placed in there for the next user.

They need a lesson from the FrenchOver here we pay max of 2 euro for a shower, usually in a nice clean room, some are free. Free parking. Better road network. etc etc etc.
Dont all rush over and spoil it though !!!
Is it my understanding that each section of motorway in france if privately operated?. When i drove to the south of france last year for my hols, everytime i got a ticket from the tolls it said who ran that forward section of road/motorway, including the services, laybys etc. It is shocking at how we are treated over here. The msa owners really do need to take a leaf out the french msa book. Nice big clean restrooms, vending machines serving all manor of tasty treats and drinks at a very good price. Plentiful parking that didn’t smell like a tramp in a sauna…and mainly free parking… of course things like that are never going to happen over here, because rather than being the life blood of this country, we are seen as a hindrance clogging up the veins of this country…

The only MSA on a toll in England is Norton Canes where Roadchefs head office is based but they are a separate company to Midland Expressway,
Then you have to ask do you want a road operator running a cafe or do they subcontract it out to a ‘cafe’ expert, similiar to a food production company subcontracting it’s haulage operations to transport specialists.
Anyway surely if your paying a toll and not using the services you are being overcharged ?
I also hear each ‘operator’ has their own recovery to lift you and shift you at your own expense rather than allow your own recovery out ?

Most of the showers over here are to a high standard and as long as got one on the reward card they don’t cost ya a cent. If you haven’t then it’s $10
I would gladly pay for the facilities pictured. Around £3 is a small price to pay for attended clean showers. All you need then would be to teach some of the dirty bar stewards how to use them properly and leave them as found!

I use a solar shower. Cost a fiver in wilkinsons. Just fill it with warm water. Outside shower before I catch malaria or pneumonia. Jobs a good’un
