anyone remember the Charles Shiaffino Ferries. They sailed from Shoreham to Dieppe. They were wonderful old ships, all wooden panelled inside, great food and they used to creak and groan like an old wooden sailing ship.It was a ten hour overnight crossing to get to Dieppe,so you got a good sleep and and were lot nearer to paris than if you went Dover Calais and you could always keep your permit clean. They sailed out of Dover for short time and then disappeared, anyone know what happened to them?
Evening all, Schiaffino out of the Eastern Dock Dover, reverse on, mirrors in …b … hard with an “armstrong steering” Foden! Yes they did creak and groan, but I liked them. Always tried to be early, so I could stay on the boat, I think that it only took around 10/12 drivers. Was the one boat the Rose? Do not know what happened to them at all. But I enjoyed the “adventure”.
Sometimes sailed Dover Osteend, …smelly boat, grubby cabins, right down near the sea bed!
Then there was Seagull, Southampton/ Le Havre, was it linkspan 2, and reverse on?
The boats I really enjoyed were the Leopard, and Dragon, of Normandy Ferries, out of Southampton, (for some reason I keep remembering the Dragon, as the Lion,…obviously old age)!!! But a great way to get to my office at Blainville, for 09.00, on a Monday.
Years later, Harold Montgomery started Norse Irish, so it was my only choice for Ireland! But spent a very miserable Sunday on Belfast quayside with a number of mates, in quite exotic vehicles, on our way back from the Truck Show at Ballymena, (actually it was an enjoyable Sunday)!!! And my KW, was destined to go back there to live!
Yes, on thinking about it, I have enjoyed my times on ships, (and still do), that is why I always use the 0.2.00 sailing of the “Ben”, from Heysham to the Isle of Man, rather than any of those “pretend” ships from Liverpool!! Cheerio for now.
What about this old tub? Anybody use it? It went between Poole and Viana do Castelo, Portugal.
Note the driver’s accommodation… 20ft containers welded to the deck at the aft end.
I used it twice. They gave you the duty free for nothing. Only problem was it was Pastis or nothing!!
norfolk:
I remember the old Purbeck , the two im trying to remember i think one was called Coutans? (aka cocoa tin ) the other might have been Armorique? i know that they sailed whatever the weather. If you opted to fly they used to give you either 200 ■■■■ or a bottle of spirits and you waited for the ship at a hotel in Cherbourg. for some reason the Spaniards always opted to sail i never knew why? mind you the planes wernt that hot one was a push pull job(prop front and back)
Hi Norfolk by god you are right they did sail in any weather,i once left for Cherbourg on sunday night and got in tuesday morning and i could not stand up straight without swaying for a day after we docked. There was a young steward on the cocotin called Michael and i think he batted for the other side but he was good at his job,i remember when you got out in the channel so far the telly lost its signal, the other thing was if you had steak for dinner it was either a flash into the pan or it was raw so i learnt the word " bianque " pretty qwick, sorry about the spelling.I also remember the plane rides and do you remember the stretched merc taxi that had the job of taking us to the airport on the cliffs above Cherbourg, hey they truly were Mary Hopkins moments ( those were the days ) cheers Buzzer.

Yes, remember them well. I reckon, apart from the reversing on lark with no rearward view, the best ones I’ve ever been on. Like Saviem I always got there early to be in the first 12 to travel on board. And it wasn’t just because I didn’t want dockers shifting my motor (though that was a strong consideration), the food and service was excellent. I, and most of the drivers I knew, turned my nose up at the quids in hand to cross over as a passenger on Sealink (and then get a free trip with another driver, well, for the price of a beer or two at least).
I don’t know what became of them but they were a family firm, French, and I think only about 3 ships in all.
two memories i remember of truckline, two lads with haz cargo in 20 ft tanks ,tanks loaded on top outside units loaded below i was waiting in Cherbourg to board ( it was running 8 hrs late ) when it arrived it was found the two tanks had been washed off along with an unacompanied tilt, the two drivers drove off with the units only to end up reloading and returning home, short trip! On another occasion one of Beresfords drivers took the keys off the French taxi driver taking us to the plane taking us home , he told himthat hed driven half way across Europe and he wasnt bein killed in the last 10 ks ,either he slowed down or he,d throw him out and take the moter himself, the guy modified his driving (Beresfords driver being built like a brick outhouse!)
hi all,
i saw these old bath tubs when our cruise ship was docked in piraeus greece back in august 2011.the anthi marina looks like an ex townsend thoresen boat from years ago maybe the herald did live on after all

There used to be in Tenham high street in Kent a piece of timber /bench with a brass plate on it to comm emerate two drivers who died on the Spirit of free enterprise when she sank, i think they drove for Woods a local firm who later became WRM/ Turner any one know if its still there?

I know someone has already written about the Herald, but what did happen to her when she was re-floated and where did she go, I sure she was being moved and broke free somewhere. Was she scrapped

Thats the old Spirit of free Enterprise that then became P & O Pride of Kent
The one next to her looks like the old Normandy ferries ‘Lion’
The ‘Herald’, by the way, was raised and towed to the breakers.

I took this photo over thirty years ago and somebody said that this was either The Lion or The Leopard but I can’t remember what it was called.
Regards Steve.
gazzer:
Pride of Dover mothballed in Tilbury and the Pride of Calais plus one other around the corner.
Pride of Dover is now called Pride amd is currently being towed to Tuzla in Turkey. Rumour has it that she has been bought by TEF to work the Ramsgate Ostende route.
Its also rumoured that the Pride of Calais has been chartered by TEF to run the same route as the Larkspur and Gardenia are only fit for scrap.
