Shipping out of and into Poole

Ray Smyth:
Hello Geoff, Hopefully, Here are the missing pictures.

Kind Regards, Ray Smyth.

Thanks for the pics Ray have you any of the truck you were driving while working out of Pompey.Regards Geoff

Hello Geoff, I worked for Robert Baillie from early 1970 until end 1972. I was based at their Wigan depot,
making the occasional trip to Portsmouth and Horndean depot. I started a Robert Baillie thread on Trucknet
last December, not much response, but quite a few replies from Southampton drivers who knew Baillies
drivers from the late 60s/70s. My lorry driving started in 1965,aged 21,and lasted until early 2015, 50 years!!
The only Baillies vehicle picture I have is a not very good quality image of a Mark 1 Atkinson/40ft Trailer.
If you look at “Long Departed Southampton Hauliers” on Trucknet, you will find me and my picture from
page 392 onward, I have developed a bit of banter with some of the Soton boys. Despite my ferry pictures,
I was never on regular European work,in fact I probably only did about 30 trips “Over The Water”.

Kind Regards, Ray Smyth. raysmyth@fsmail.net

I remember they used to take your truck or car photo as you left the ferry, good old Brittany Ferries.

I cant remember that being done at Poole or Cherbourg , but I can at Caen.

They used to do that as you boarded and you could buy them on board. Did it on the Portsmouth-Santander Saturday night boat as well

Hi Dean thanks for the pics really glad to hear from you again. The Axminster boys were pretty good at posing, and I think you are spot on about Permatrans being part of Swains I will confirm with Kieth Lovell at the weekend.I have been on the Breizh-Izel a few times from both Poole and Portsmouth I seem to remember it having a Phillipino crew. The last time I was on it docked in Le Havre in bad weather and I only just managed to get my unit off on the quayside and they pulled the flap up as it was to unsafe to try to unload complete rigs.Cheers Geoff

Either the Purbeck or Coutances with an Aquila trailer on the linkspan. They had a office in Poole then.

Due to the harbour being very shallow it has to be constantly dredged so the ferries do not run aground.

The dredgers.

On way home couple of weeks ago.

How long do you allow from South Spain to Cherbourg Cliff , we are driving back down in January as madam doesn’t want to do Biscay at that time of year after a bad experience last year, I was reckoning (subject to ferry times as it doesnt dock until after lunch ) , night 1 Nantes , night 2 Burgos (if we go that way ,if not Valladolid ) then through to Sedella.
