Geoff, remember last time i run into Mick was coming into Poole on the barfleur about 18 mths ago may be longer and i seem to remember he was retiring soon afterwards ?

Hi Dean I think it may have been longer than 18 months since you saw mick.I believe he is coming up to 70 soon and he still looks as he did years ago lucky so and so,I think he has been retired for some time now.cheers Geoff

gazzer:
In Cherbourg about 1973/4. I see that this is a 50 registered truck but right hand drive…never noticed it before.

Hi Gazzer they had some good old boys driving for them out of Poole.Pete Gower,Wrecker,Soapy,Kieth Lovell to name a few that I can’t remember anymore at the moment.cheers Geoff

My first taste of international was with Atkins driving one of the french reg trucks. I flew out with two other drivers to pick up the truck in Cherbourg. All that paperwork to take in, t forms, cmr`s carnet de passage, permits. I didn’t have a clue. There was about 6 drivers in Atkins office when I got there, all of them trying to help me but to be honest I was that confused it all went in one ear and out the other.Georges Osmont was there and he was a great help but I think the greatest help was Mick Cox who was very patient with me tryingto explain to me the way to get to Garanor in Paris then clearing customs with Panalpina. Other drivers I recall on Atkins were Ray Wheeler who put me in touch with Atkins initially [thanks Ray] Phil Heath aka Rapid Lapin. Bernie Thompson’s brother Dennis,Mick Heaton and at that time the only French driver Michel Prime who I used to see regularly on Brittany Ferries right up until I retired working for Transport Landais. Just to finish those RHD 1924 frog reg mercs driven by Engishmen really did confuse the Kermit Kops, "la companie Atkins SARL est Francais,le camion est lmmatriculee en France est vous ete Anglais!!! Bizarre:.

Interesting you mention Ray Wheeler there Keith , there is a photo somewhere on Trucknet of Rycrofts F89 which has been restored and is used to pull a powerboat by someone in the Ringwood area , the person driving is the splitting image of Ray, but apparently its the owner of the F89

A couple of small pieces in various magazines about the Purbeck going to Spain, that will be nice around the
Bay of Biscay, and the Barfleur being stretched before delivery.

Need to click on them to read.

These were always through Poole.(Click on the pages to read )

The Coutances or Purbeck in the background.

MIRA picked the right company to research trailer rollovers or coils of steel coming out of the side.K569 MOW was driven by David Crawford , Mine was K581 MOW.

Yep, when I decided to pack up being "a small Haulier " ,I sold my Globetrotter HNH 350 Y to Alan.

Evening all,

Well, this is a sort of meander around the cobweb invested areas of my cranium, …but sort of related to Poole, Cherburg, and of course Derby…the home of FB Atkins.

FB Atkins was a real family firm, Ken, Arthur, and Ian, taking over from their parents…(and for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the sister who ran the café at the end of the yard next to the A38)…got to be old age…for she was very nice indeed…(I loved her bacon sandwiches)!!!

The relationship between the brothers could become quite volatile…in fact when things got really “active”, Ken, (the elder one), used to go to the bottom of the yard and confer with his …Donkey…who he told me had more sense!!!

Arthur was a director of Derby County, in the days of Brian Clough…enough said…but boy could he see business opportunities…

For years their big job was the rubber and tyre job up to Carlisle…then they discovered France…

Ever wondered why they went from Mercedes to Fiat

And from Fiat to Renault■■?

Totally down to one man, Anthony G Neath…a real Bristolian boy…and an avid Bristol City supporter…and he and Arthur really hit it off…

Tony worked for Fiat GB, out of Concord Road Acton…so in came the 170.26s…

Then Tony worked for Renault Truck and Bus UK , out of Park Royal…so in came first of all a TR305, (painted in Atkins original livery of Black, Brown, and Yellow…sounds horrid…but looked absolutely great…Findern Jester was her name…

Then Ken got the bug about costs…and in came the ultra economic…(and really that is all you can say about them)…little 290s!!

Then Tony went off as an owner operator for Westermann Forwarding…(post the honest and reputable Tom Annable, RIP)…and Atkins became part of the Japanese Logistic Giant…(but of course they were right next door to the new Toyota Plant)!

I used to love to go to Cherburg, simply to speak my native tongue… Cadwalladers, .Swains, Atkins, Axminster, and a myriad of others…and as “we” shipped our SMs, and TRs from Cherburg to the UK market…if I got a long weekend pass, then Truckline would always find space for my Renault car on the boat!!!

But Gentlemen, never ever think that it is because one vehicle is better than another, the reason for a fleet changing its buying policy…often it is the man, and the personal relationship that has been established…

Anthony G Neath…wherever you are…bon chance…

I raise a Bollinger to you!!

Cheerio for now.

Thanks for that post Saviem nicely constructed and informative ! It is a shame they are no longer going
like so many others ! Swains,Cadwalladers,Axminster etc !

Out of intrest just how many lorries were they running at there peak ,do you know ?

Intresting couple of bits i found about french farmers causing havoc !
You will know these 2 companies and drivers, both regulars through Poole.

Borrowed this pic from another thread.

Ray White a regular through Poole.

Article about Truckline.

Apparently drivers were not happy with the conditions !!! :unamused:
The Coutances and Purbeck were rough old boats but i always thought the food was pretty good on the
whole ! The showers and toilets should have been condemned but i thought the bunks were more
comfortable than the newer boats they were pretty deep mattresses from memory !!

Click on pictures to read as will focus better !

I used to find the Coutance and Purbeck OK, but the Normandy Shipper was another story.
