Shetland Islands - Info

Been asked to take a 18t fridge up too the Shetlands Islands, ferries etc are sorted but can anyone give me local advice on parking etc

In Lerwick should b able to park at port which is pretty much in town. Anywhere else just villages, other islands again at ferry.
They know everything has to come by ferry/truck so just ask, they’ll keep u right.
Google TV series Shetland for an idea of the lie of the land.

You can park at the ferry port in Lerwick (literally, just as you hit dry land!) or, if you head North out of town, there’s an industrial estate on your right; plenty of places to park in there. (Out of the ferry terminal and turn right to head North).

If stuck, just ask. The Shetlanders will quite happily keep you right.

BTW. Once you hit Mainland Shetland, take your Tacho card out - Shetland is Tacho regs exempt!!
(Yep, you want to drive for 24 hours straight - you can!)

Doesn’t look big enough on the map to drive fer 24 hours.

Neither does Le Mans, but they manage somehow.

You’d have a hell of a job driving for 24 hours on Shetland, or from fading memory, about 24 minutes depending on speed. That’s assuming you can see anything as they also pretty much invented horizontal rain!

Do watch out for what has to be the UK’s shortest 30mph limit if it’s still there. Can’t remember which road it’s on, but I’d estimate it must be 100 yards max. Probably got a speed camera van on it by now.

Finally, everything and I mean everything shuts on a Sunday even the pubs it seems. However, the views are still open and they are well worth the trip.

Also, everything is rather pricey so take plenty cash.

How do you explain the missing milage on return to the mainland?

Out of scope

Quite, so the advice to ‘take the card out’ could potentially get the op in a bit of bother…

Nope. When you take your card out, the tacho spits out a print out. Keep the print out and when asked show the print out and simply tell VOSA that you were on Shetland. Missing miles accounted for.

And don’t take your dog (if you have one) cos they aren’t many trees for it to have a ■■■■ against …

Shetland, advice on parking? Don’t reverse, you’ll land in the drink. Don’t go forward, you’ll land in the drink. Isn’t the whole place about the size of a lorry with one pub on the edge of the parking space with a half ■■■■■■ Blue whale smoking a pipe in the corner talking crap about the good old days of the Vikings?

Take tacho card out, change mode to OUT. Its then recorded on the tacho head as out of scope.

Or alternatively just leave your card in, comply with tacho rules, save having to do any explaining at a later date.

Steve the Argonaut,
If any advice you’ve got on here has been of any help you’re allowed to say so!
