Sherran's ... and other Manchester firms

Thanks to Stanfield’s detection work again for showing who’s lorries had that plastic barrel on top of their cabs. It seems Watney’s and Wilson’s were the same firm after all.

Is Reddish Demolition still going, another from Stanfield. This Reiver’s definitely had a hard life.

Anyone remember these from Cheadle Hulme, sent in by Stanfield.

If I remember rightly they ran D800 6 wheel tippers dark blue cabs and grey bodies.

yes mate reddish demolition is still going but sadly no albions .

Another one for TIPIT’s memory bank
Does anyone remember Ardwick Plant Hire…All ex Hoveringham Reivers still in the orange colours with the APH name on in black…Worked from a small yard behind the Apollo at Ardwick Green

Hi ovlov, I never realised they were ex Hoveringham Reiver’s they had, is it the same Ardwick Plant Hire that’s now in Hale ?
Do you remember Barry Haulage off Croft St, Clayton. The last I’d saw of them they were running a couple of F7 twin steer units on contract to Kellogg’s, was that the Len Shield’s / Quickmix yard they took over ?

Hi guys, dont know if this is one of the revers you were talking about.Ill post it on my thread and wait for result.

Thanks for adding the photo Nigel, yes they’re the ones they used.

Barry’s mate…They moved from Bamford Street Clayton into the old Quickmix yard in Croft Street yes and they have only just ceased trading. The vehicles of late were all in Tennants colours and Kevin Barry the grandson of the founder runs the traffic there and I speak to him on a regular basis.

Hi Ovlov
Is this the Tennants Chemicals at hazelbottom road near blakeley village Cheetham Hill area.

Does anyone know if ‘Tom’s Tippers’ are still operating ?

Remember in the mid 80s, they had a right eclectic mix of ancient ex Tarmac and ex Peakstone vehicles on contract to Peakstone Hope Street Salford.

They were always early risers those lads, they’d be in Dove Holes at 5am collecting some single size l/s or dust to take down to Hope Street upon which they’d spend the rest of the day working out of there.

I used to run with those lads out of Tilcon’s plant on Mode Wheel Road, Weaste, in the '90’s and as you say they used to have a lot of oldish trucks. The last time that I saw them though they had a few brand new tippers, I wonder if they work from Tarmac’s Bredbury Plant now that Weaste belongs to Aggregate Industries?

The very same mate

Hi ovlov. Cheers for that mate.We used to take the caustic in there everyday x 2 from Hays/Albion.
Bonkey there is a picture of Toms Tippers on Wagonpics .com M reg DAF 85 with the name T Naughton Manchester on the door and body.also a good few other tipper pics on there aswell.

Bonkey… I saw one of Tom’s Tippers CF 8 wheelers on Hyde Rd only a few days ago, it looked as though it was heading back towards their yard near the old Longsight Freightliner depot.
Lafarge opened up a stone & tarmac plant around 10 years ago beside Smithfield Market (Ashbury’s) some of the tippers from North Wales collect from there, I’d never thought Buxton limestone would have been that different from the Welsh stuff.

It’s the purest in the world from Hindlow. Sonotri and Dentreseangle have been taking 6, 7, 8 tanker loads a day to the continent for the last 35 years and container loads of bags go all over the globe.

Doubt it makes much difference in crusher run though.

Are Barry and Paul Gervin still operating their skip vehicles out of Trafford Park by the way?

Not a Manchester firm this coal/coke haulier was from Coppul, but they certainly deserve a mention due to their ingenuity. They based most of their wagons on the LAD Reiver to achieve good payloads and converted them all into 8 wheelers. Even what looks like a Dodge 500 8x4 started out as a Leyland chassis then had a ■■■■■■■ V8 fitted by them, they also fitted Bristol cabs on Leyland and Atkinson chassis. Possibly the only genuine lorries they ever used were the ERF LV, Volvo F86 and Routemans. Does anyone know what their fleet was when they finished in 1980.

That’s the same guy Harry, one of the last of the leg trailers! He was part of the “Speedway Group” of coal haulers Like Fletchers of Ibstock and Coal Deliveries Limited from Mansfield with other ex speedway men like Ron Clarke and used some of the Sentinel TVW conversions which included eight leggers with four pot Gardners in them to get maximum payload. They were double shifted around the clock and did phenomenal mileages in the '60’s.
