Sherran's ... and other Manchester firms

Does any one have any pics of Cressy’s Grains (Alderley Edge) wagons.
Some of the earliest memories I have of lorries are watching their tippers pass Belle Vue, with water dripping from their tailboards as they went by. They used 4 wheeler BMC FF’s, Bedford TK’s and 6 wheeler LAD Albion’s back in the early 60’s. Then onto AEC’s and ERF’s,running just Leyland’s and Foden Alpha’s these days I think, but have they ever operated any non British stuff ? it’ll be interresting to see just what they replace them with now.

Hiya Bob I used to move their machines from park st before they moved to preston That old Hino in the background brings back some memorys .Good set of lads worked there Regards Foden 46

Couple more off Evers stolen from another thread on here!!!

Another two of Evers stolen from another thread on here

Here are some from the past, a group of Trader’s taken in 1960 working in the centre of Manchester near the CIS building.

One of Trumix’s 6x4 mixers coming out of their Trafford Park depot in 1964.

Mc Guiness’s low loader in Ardwick in 1969.
(bob-lad, I can’t imagine Walker’s with a trailer like that. )

Going off the thread a bit, but I had to put this old Manchester wagon on.

From Wilson’s old yard at Newton Heath.
I thought their wagons all had red plastic barrels on top of the cab though, or was that just the old Ford’s they had ?

Another old Manchester drinks firm, Slack & Cox from West Gorton. This was 1961 at Edge Lane, Stretford facing what is now Stretford Arndale. They had a fleet of yellow & blue Bedford TK flats, but in the 60’s they still had one old Bedford MST from the late 40’s still running about, a little 4 wheeler Tanker painted in their older colours of maroon & cream.
Their yard is now Stoodley’s Car Auctions.

Getting back to the tippers, a Bradford Colliery wagon from 1928.
Was their colliery on the site where Wal-Mart at Eastlands now stands, and does anyone know what lorries they operated in the 50’s / 60’s.

This body has got some clearence on it though.

That body on the last pic TIPIT, would be handy for tipping over a wall or a hedge, been involved with tippers for over forty years, never seen one like that before.
Cheers Dave.

Tipit…The colliery was where the football ground is now opposite the Asda

Thanks for that ovlov, I could remember seeing Johnson’s Wire Works just past it then on both sides of Pottery Lane, but no recollection of the colliery.

Do you remember the other colliery at Audenshaw…The Snipe Colliery…Waddacors carted a lot out of there.

I’ve heard of it, but can’t remember it. Heard my dad talking of Beatie’s coal wagons working out of Blind Lane Ardwick, and some owner drivers there. Graham Beatie (no relation) Jim Yacoby (ex Belle Vue speedway rider) and another called ■■? Robinson with a dark blue LAD Dodge 6x4.

Another operator although still in earthworks I dont think they run tippers anymore! :frowning:

hiya,
watney’s brewery had the red plastic barrel on the roof.
thanks harry long retired.

The Snipe pit on manchester road I remember it well. Now got a B & Q -Currys -Mcdonalds built on it .Over the road from it was the snipe public house, next to that used to be a little wooden hut sold sarnies and drinks this was owned by my uncle.

And here it finaly comes the old firm that started this thread off W.F. Sherran’s added by my best mate Stanfield. And after all this time I now find their main yard was Stalybridge and not Gorton as I thought, (the things you learn from this site.) And below it another belonging to Sherran’s but in the dark blue livery on their “Cary Springs” contract.
