Service area grub

Here’s some good advice if you are traveling the NY thruway. If you get to a service area that has a ‘Sbarro’ eatery use it, I have always aboided it thinking it would be rubbish but … Jeeesus christ it’s extremely good food and value, in particular the chicken parm with roasted spuds and a garlic bread stick is excelent.
I will never use any of the other food stalls at such places if this company is there.
YUMMY

Bloody hell Pat, I had exactly the same meal at Sbarro in one of the Chicago service plazas on Thursday evening. I had the pasta as well as the spuds and got a Chipotle Dip for the bread stick and still got change from $12 :sunglasses:

Another good place in those service plazas are the Panda Express chinky resturaunts, two portions of whichever meat dish you choose and fried rice all for about $8, it’s decent grub too

I was actually very suprised by the value ad quality Mark, unlike those damm BK and McD meals that are like eating a carpetburger, the food is cooked fresh, tastes extremely good and is actually filling. At Sloatsburg Ny for instance you serve your own portion to how ever much you want and at the checkout its placed on a scale and you pay by the ounce.
On 2 occasions i have done this when my appetite has varied, one meal was quite large and came to $10.75 and about 3 weeks later I got the same meal but smaller for $7.50.
Damm good value I say

Another good tip should you ever have the missfortune to be stuck at the worlds worst truck stop … The Pilot, Milford, CT don’t eat that Wendy crap, walk out the front door and across the road, walk round the back of Dunkin Donuts to Cracker Barrel, the food is great and again good value.

We use Cracker Barrels when we go to the States on holiday they are good value but have you noticed the average age of the customers?

No, but I have noticed British tourists being nosey
As it happens I am currently at that very same Pilot, out of hours. Watching idiots who can’t reverse to save their lives.

Pat, Cracker Barrell are very good value too, but at the Pilot in Milford there’s a bloke who delivers BBQ, or there was when I was last there, it is very good, although I’m usually stuffed by the time I get there as I go in the first plaza in CT (northbound) and get a foot long chilli dog, mmm mmmm mmmmm :sunglasses:

I went un one when I was on holiday in Florida and it was nice. Best bit was the toothless hillbilly waitress hitting on my brother in law.

Pat,heres a warning I shall be in Mass for the ATHS show at the end of May, and not only will I be nosing in Cracker Barrels I will be admiring those fine US trucks you despise driving. LOL

As it happens I don’t despise driving this new one, it’s like driving the FH12 I had in 94 but with a huge sleeper.

And Mark… That first service area after the Milford Pilot has new reopened and remodelled, it’s a vast impovement, It’s got Sbarro, McD’s, Dunkin ■■■■■ and much more, it also has hook ups for trucks (A/C, Heating, TV and Internet).

Havn’t decided where to “nose” around after the antique truck show in West Springfield,my son is into trains and theres Steamtown in Scranton, Pennsylvania thats a possibilty. The wife is happy to go to a Walmart or a Mall every evening, but it isn,t as cheap over there now eh. Might try a Sbarro though Pat. Mark

Din’t feel too safe in Cracker Barrel :open_mouth:

I deliver Scranton on a regular basis, there’s not much to see at ‘Steamtown’ so you may be disapointed.
If you have time to nose around head up to Lake George NY and see some real history involving the British. It’s a great resort with steamboats, lakeshore bars and the most beautifull lake in the USA. Fort William Henry is there (from last of the Mohecans) and scattered around this area are lots of British forts and military sites, there are also the designer outlets on US 9 in Lake George for real bargains. South of there is Saratoga Springs, very posh and it’s where the Americans whipped our asses
(Saratoga battlefield).

Lake George it is then Pat,thanks Mark.

All you have to do is turn up there mate countless motels and hotels and the best is just north of the outlets on US 9 … The Mohecan Motel, I used to just drive up there and see if they had vacancies, they rarely let me down.
Loved the area so much I moved here from England.

I had the Rand/Mcnally out last night Pat[the one with all the Walmart locations]. I really like the West Coast but the flight just about drives me mad now. It will be nice to find somewhere that isnt on the normal UK tourist guide. I was in Mass a couple of years ago and we went to an antique truck museum in Conn,1 of the guides there sent us to a collection owned by a guy called Yowaski,We turned up at the fellows large shed about 3pm on a cold saturday he was about 65 and working on a trailer behind a Mack Superliner,he just said to look around, sadly the the collection of old trucks was depleted due to finances. When we were finished he took us around the sand pit he had and I dont think he ever sold a truck,he just parked them up there. He then took us a few miles to another shed that was full of all sorts of kit and spares even the old car he went on honeymoon in. He showed us how to close the shutter door and said when you have finished lock up and go,he then went and let us look around.I reckon thats just about as nosey as you can get Pat.

hi pursy, lake george has one of the biggest motorcycle rallys, on the second week in june,as pat said, thers plenty of places to stay in the area, the scenery is gorgeous, theres also an old rail road near there called the battenkill rail road ,in cambridge ny, niagra falls is only a few hours drive from there also , lake george is only an hour drive from vermont, another beutiful part of the world, and the best part is that the scenery is free  just watch out for very dodgy blokes in red tankers near whitehall
cheers diesel

You are still a ■■■■■■■ Mick

Actually Pursy I first came here in 1992 and stayed with Diesel Dan (Mick) for about 10 days, he showed me Lake George and the area and I fell in love with the place (no British tourists for instance). He’s to blame for me living here

I aint a tourist I go to the US to get parts for my old pete, eat junk food and annoy ex pats. Mark
