Seriously unimpressed

I’ve just had to change a DAF CF 85 footbake valve. Fortunately it is not a job I’ve had to do recently, in fact the last one wasn’t even on a CF it was 16 years ago and on a plain 85. Jesus wept, what an ■■■■■■■■ thing to do, I don’t recall so much agravation on the M reg although I do rememeber a seized throttle pedal pivot which was a real pain. Having had three days as sickness relief DAF aid fitter some years ago, I’m just relieved I never got the job beside the road with some controller ringing up and bending my ears every 20 minutes for ‘an update on progress’.

There are three nuts which help secure the valve to the floorplate from above so the pedal has to be removed to get at one of them. Two rollpins passing through a ■■■■■ aluminium lug hold the brake pedal pivot pin, now this vehicle is coming up for 14 years old so I suppose they had a right to be seized, but I would expect them to be the same in a six month old tipper. The 85 IIRC used E clips to keep the pivot pin in place, but that was obviously too simple. The angle is such that the floor plate has to come out which means removing the column cowling, various plastic panels and releasing some dash fixings to get it out. Once out the pins still won’t move so then comes a dilemma: break the floor plate (£254 retail) and save the pedal or heat the lug and melt the plastic bits of the pedal pushrod (£95 retail) and possibly still need a floorplate anyway… and guess what ? no rollpins come with either part - nor are they listed. And it didn’t help either finding I’d been sent a handbrake valve.
