There are many companies developing and trailing the system round the World, all will have the same concerns and although this is government funded, it’s other companies developing the systems, including one that does defence systems, among its many activities. Like I said not impossible, but there are probably easier ways to hijack or get hold of a truck for malicious purposes.
Defence systems like the RN SSBN launched missile test where it went in completely the wrong direction?!? I’m sorry I don’t share your confidence in the technology not getting abused by a third party or simply going wonky.

Millions of people fly everyday, there is a great deal of technology in that, but it goes wrong far less than drivers make mistakes that lead to death and injury.
The Royal Navy, RAF and Army operate many hi-tech bits of equipment everyday, but you don’t get regular news report of fighters dropping from the sky or a ship going off in the wrong direct because of computer failure.
Exactly. For example there are drones over the middle east every day with pilots Sat in offfices in Nevada or the like. One failed missile test is hardly definitive proof this tech doesn’t work

Like your post muckles …though it doesn’t apply to the US Navy lol

You’re right a lot of tech works flawlessly most of the time. Its odd really I love tech, I hold a couple of IT certifications, I build computers and tinker happily with electronics. I should be impressed by automated vehicles. But I’m not. I can’t help it, it leaves me cold. And not just trucks, the driverless car too. I know we fleshy parts are often the bit that causes the accident but I still feel happier having human drivers actually driving.

Though to be fair, how often do you see planes or ships in convoy surrounded by impatient Sunday drivers who’s only interest is in getting from A to B as quickly as possible
Self drive lorries will happen, but I think there are lots of obstacles to overcome before they become the norm.

We have a lot more is common than I would have thought, I’m a tech fan, worked in IT. The technology and testing does interest me, wouldn’t mind being involved, but personally I’d prefer to be driving a truck then letting a computer take over, but automation will happen to driving and many other jobs, including some quite skilled jobs, that is inevitable.
What worries me most about it is not me losing my job, I’ve changed careers several times in my life and I don’t have a lifetimes work ahead of me, it’s the social impact of so many jobs being automated, what type of society will we have, will it be one where there is plenty of wealth spread around due to so much being automated and loads of new jobs or is it going to be a few with plenty and the rest fighting for the scraps, followed by civil unrest and revolution.

The latter if we keep a tory government. Realistically not everyone is capable of a highly skilled job nor would there be enough jobs for everyone. So there’s going to be generations of unemployable people if a lot of work becomes automated. The social care system, benefits the dole etc will need a radical overhaul.

Suppose that depends on your perspective, for example, if the failed missile test caused a missile to take out my house and leave me sitting on an toilet seat, 1 square of toilet paper in my hand and surrounded by rubble that was once my home.
I’D BE CONVINCED.

I find it incredible how some of you cannot see this happening. We have the technology to implement driver less trucks now. It will most certainly be a reality. The majority of you on here that scoff at such wondrous things and will see it as black magic no doubt. Hence the smart drivers I talk about, these will indeed be piloted by intelligent drivers who have other skills to offer as they most certainly will not be the traditional trucks as we know them now. Mumbo jumbo, I think not.
We don’t have the technology to implement driverless trucks right now. If we did, they’d be out here already. These things are currently only capable of driving in a straight line on a straight road if there’s no one else about. In he future I have no doubt that there will be, but that’ll be decades away.
If you’re so smart, why do you believe everything you hear without question?

Why do you have to always throw in an insult, your obviously a real expert on this subject, not. Do you think your actually in the know of this technology, so when this gets trialed next year, they will stop the trials if it isn’t in a straight line. you are living in the dark ages and technology such as this does not take decades from now, it has been developed decades ago.

Like what is so much going to be automated it’s long distance motorway driving that will be automated and that’s all its just means the people who cant cope with suburbs and city driving will be no more
If you research it its never going to be able to do the donkey work

Slight bend in a motorway is a bit different to tight bends on an A road.
Technology might mostly already be with us but a trial next year. Then that’s got to be analysed. The kinks worked out. Maybe another trial after that in 2020 and so on. Could easily be over a decade before its actually approved and available to the consumer.
i have a mower at home that I switch on and let it cut my grass whilst I am out. I also have a hoover that will also vacuum my entire house which incidentally is not in a straight line.

This current technology being adaptive cc, which a lot of cars and trucks have nowadays. Full automation, being no drivers at all in the cab, is something anybody driving professionally as of now will not have to worry about in their working lifetime as this technology is still being developed. The CTO of Tesla even admitted that AI that has a subconscious is way off in terms of development. That’s a massive statement and he’s just talking about cars here, not trucks. Hell, even Mercedes have scaled back their autonomous truck development after they said every road would need to change for current state autonomy software to be reliable and safe.
Fully autonomous driving is the future. But it’s not our future.
nightline:
You just have to read this post to see what brainless people work in this game multy drop, a driver for every truck and they believe what there saying
Its not black magic and it isn’t really a fully automated truck, it is following the vehicle in front via remote control. Hardly Sci fi stuff or something being developed for decades. Get a grip and get real.
