I’ve spent my…
Entire career trying my damnest NOT to tailgate the lorry in front of me. I’ve been pretty darn good at it too.
Now, I’m supposed to sit passively in my truck as second or third in the platoon, checking my Fakebook status or texting on my phone cos I’m bored witless.
i wont be volunteering to be in the platoon
Excuse me whilst I intercept the data being sent between the vehicles and insert my own spoof commands to cause trucks 2 and 3 to have an accident. Or in the case of fully automated no drivers scenario take control and force the AI truck to stop or pull off where it’s not meant to so I can hijack it’s valuable load.

So if one breaksdown do they all stop and ,do I get 3 callouts lol…

And you don’t imagine that those developing the systems haven’t thought about the possibility of hacking and hijacking
Not saying it wouldn’t be impossible, but about as likely or maybe less likely than a driven truck being crashed deliberately or hijacked.

I tell you now intercepting the data being sent wireless between vehicles would be child’s play although you’d have to be near by yourself. The tricky bit would be breaking whatever encryption they use. Probably to expensive and time consuming for a criminal or terrorist to bother but certainly not impossible.

Like I said don’t you think they’ve thought about security of the data, not just for security, but if 2 convoys operate in a similar area, you don’t want the trucks following one truck getting confused by the data stream from the other convoy.

I’m sure it’s been thought of. But then again isn’t this all partly government funded and look at that massive hack of the NHS last year. Forgive me for being sceptical about the security systems in place.

In a little over a hundred years. I don’t think getting some trucks to run up and down a motorway is beyond the wit of mankind to be honest

There are many companies developing and trailing the system round the World, all will have the same concerns and although this is government funded, it’s other companies developing the systems, including one that does defence systems, among its many activities. Like I said not impossible, but there are probably easier ways to hijack or get hold of a truck for malicious purposes.
muckles:
These aren’t questions raised by drivers who don’t understand or want the system, but from those involved in the feasibility study for the trails and future use.
Who will be paid lots of money to sort out issues arising from these and further tests. No one’s claiming everything is ready for fleets of driverless lorries to take to the road!

Defence systems like the RN SSBN launched missile test where it went in completely the wrong direction?!? I’m sorry I don’t share your confidence in the technology not getting abused by a third party or simply going wonky.

Exactly. I don’t like the idea that our jobs are being designed out of existence but we need to be realistic
Complete load of nonsense and 8 million down the pan !

I haven’t said it won’t happen, worked with many engineers in vehicle R&D in my time and I’m sure they’ll address the issues, but there’s far more to this than just linking trucks to follow each other, that the media hype would seem to make out.

Millions of people fly everyday, there is a great deal of technology in that, but it goes wrong far less than drivers make mistakes that lead to death and injury.
The Royal Navy, RAF and Army operate many hi-tech bits of equipment everyday, but you don’t get regular news report of fighters dropping from the sky or a ship going off in the wrong direct because of computer failure.
Im sure that various forms of automation will be trialed on our roads sooner rather than later. Maybe one form will be of remote drivers? A few drivers go into the office and sit at their consoles. They each take a vehicle from the depot to the m-way. The vehicle tags onto a convoy, the driver can now take control of another vehicle at the depot, or take one from the m-way back to the depot. When vehicles leave the m-way near their delivery point a driver takes it over to guide it through an urban area to the drop. The drop could be hundreds of miles away. Technology not there yet? Maybe not quite. But the aircraft bombing jihadis in Syria and Iraq are flown by RAF pilots who live at home in the UK. They drive into work, take their aircraft off the deck, do what they do, and return the
plane to base. Home for dinner with wife and kids, while the plane gets fueled up in its desert base. Imagine sitting in a chair with perfect all round vision as surround screens show what is around the vehicle from multiple cameras. Parking sensor type transponders for night, rain, fog etc. Technology gets much cheaper and better very quickly. Mass production of these systems will bring costs down rapidly. It
ll come on with leaps and bounds.
Nowhere, am I saying that all of this is unremittingly good news!
Society as we know it will have to change. A few well paid people in specialist jobs, and a mass of others all “on the dole”, is unsupportable.
Universal Basic Income anyone ?
Or a bloody revolution?
Luddites or Brave New World?
We live in interesting times.
I find it incredible how some of you cannot see this happening. We have the technology to implement driver less trucks now. It will most certainly be a reality. The majority of you on here that scoff at such wondrous things and will see it as black magic no doubt. Hence the smart drivers I talk about, these will indeed be piloted by intelligent drivers who have other skills to offer as they most certainly will not be the traditional trucks as we know them now. Mumbo jumbo, I think not.
If they want 3 trailers running together they’ve been doing it in Australia for years, it’s called a road train
