sad to say they have mate, getting on for 2 years ago i think, then went ERF, SO THATS IT! No more British lorries, its gone just like the rest of our industry. Dont know why they just sell the whole fxxxing country, might as well, theres nothing ‘great’ about britain anymore, all that was great was sold or closed down. Seddon, erf and foden all went for the sake of market share, its ■■■■■■■■ mate.
Thanks for the info, I thought Iveco still produced them. I’ve seen a few dustcarts around my way on 56 plates so they must be one of the last then.
I thought they still used the sed ak name for municipal vehicles. Or was it the same as foden they stoped when ■■■■■■■ didnt bother with a euro 4 engine.

2006, I think, when the last Seddon was produced, but by Iveco in Spain, so not very much Seddon about it, other than attaching a Big A.
Funnily enough, it was canned the year before it would have been the centenary of Atkinson, and Foden was knocked on the head the year before its 150th anniversary… hmmmmm, saved a bit of money on marking the anniversaries then??
totaly agree with straighteight, this country has gone to the chuffin dogs.

Fine example of a another loss of a British manufacturer.
I had one of those with a 201 Gardner for a couple of years when I drove for Tilcon Dave. Very comfortable cab and a lovely gearbox, only problem was it’s weight! It would only carry a 19.30 tonnes payload compared to 20+ on the Fodens so after 6 years use they were sold on.

And ERF were finished a year before their 75th year!!! seems to be a recurring thing
Even Dennis who were still turning out Fire Appliances have now bit the dust, not sure if they might still be doing Municipal’s but another good old British name rubbed out. Soon be only one make anyway Scanvoman-Benznault owned by the Chinese no doubt and made in every country except Blighty or is that too cynical! Franky.
I bet there weren’t too many sad people when the news about the demise of " sudden accident " broke , but i was
I’ve got fond memories of seddon’s, an E reg 300 series which was horrid, a G reg strato 6x2, 14 ltr ■■■■■■■■ eaton twin splitter,
this was the first brand new unit I’d driven and was a vast improvement over the old Roadtrain it replaced ! For the last 15 yrs
i must have driven every type of municipal made by sed Atki, then Iveco, 4 wheelers, 6 wheelers, 8 wheelers. One thing i know for
sure is that the build quality went appalling when they stopped putting them together in Britain, so its no surprise they’ve folded the
brand. I work for Leeds city council, my current motor is an 06 plate 6x4 pacer ( iveco stralis ) we have 20 of this model, mine is currently back at iveco
having a brand new cab fitted ! apparently they’re all going back, all have floors splitting around the cab mounts…
Still , i shouldn’t moan, all the new replacements being drafted in are, mercedes econic’s , and they are complete b*****ks !!!

The old Seddon site supplying vehicles to The British Empire .
In the corner of a field, in a far off land, there probably lies the body of a dead Seddon .

The out fit I work for got the very last Seddons with Iveco Tectors fitted to dust carts in 2006 and they was the very last 16 trucks with a Big A on the grill. Iveco did not carry on in any way with municipals but it was said they mite?

I dont think SA were held in high esteem by many people but in my opinion i think the Ivecos are probably the worst vehicles out there now with poor build quality and appaling reliability, thats not earsay thats through operating 12 of the things
These were our first two Sed/Atks,Day cabs/8LXB/Fuller 9509/poxy group axle!!! they both ran double shift but weren’t a patch on the two ERF Bseries that replaced them!
Still think its a shame though and a disgrace really, when an old established British company closes that not more is done to preserve documentation, photographs etc, of which there must have been an abundance at one time. Some old pics of new Seddon Diesels were put on this site recently dating from the late Fifties and excellent photo’s they were. However the poster claimed the pictures had been saved from the skip when the factory closed, just how many went into oblivion is anyone’s guess but it was a wasted opportunity that these records were not properly archived. I expect the likes of AEC, Leyland, Albion, GUY etc etc. went the same way, as most of the old photo’s we have on here are from personal collections and not company archives. Franky.
Some more Seddon Atkinsons from this area.
An Atkinson 4x2 kit ready to be packed for export.
An aerial view of Seddons woodstock factory site at Newhey Oldham in the mid 70s.Most of this site is now owned by the Howarth family and is let off into industrial units.

Got to agree with you Ramone I bought an Iveco cargo in the 90s, it was the the biggest load of rubbish ever produced! I wrote to iveco and told them all they had done was ruin the good name of of the Ford Cargo which in its day was an absolute cracker!! reliable, ecenomical and HONEST nowt like its sucessor. regards kevmac47
