Couple of items for you: Many years ago I worked/ subbied for a company called W.J Molyneux/ Stewart Cameron they always ran what at that time was considered the best of tackle Volvo 88,s ect , any way old Bill one of the gaffers did a deal with Seddon Atki for 20 plus 400 series with Rolls 265/290 lumps and fuller 9 sp these were to replace 290/88,s on roaming work, needless to say it did,nt go down to well with some of the roamers who spent a lot of time away and had been used to the relative comforts of the 88,s. The first Sed Ak arrived and was given to a driverwhose nickname was King Billy, he was,nt best pleased coming off his beloved 88 and from day one he made it very plain to the office ( and any one else who would listen ) that there wasnt any thing about the motor that was any good ( despite the fact that the 290li went like sh… off a shovel 70+ and he kept up and often overtook some of the 88,s ) Any way he took it back for its first service at the agents and was sitting in the waiting room when a Manager appeared with several people in tow pointing to King Billy he said “this is the lucky driver who got the first of the 20,odd moters we are PDI ing at the moment,” then the question he wished he wished he,d never asked " How do you like it?" King Billy started and for the next ( what seem like a lifetime to the manager ) he found fault with everything from the seating to the lights ,the ash trays to the engine ,you name it he criticised it , He said he was choking to death with fumes and dust and going deaf ect ect, Finaly the Manager said " there Must… be something you like about it" King Billy replied "there is " WHAT said the Manager King Billy said " THEY FU…ING RUST QUICK!!! " The office got a phone call and King Billy never went back there again.

That’s now owned by a mate of mine from Stoke on Trent
He’s also restoring a 6x4 401 tractor unit
Carpet Express had a few, I got one brand new in 1978 with the ■■■■■■■ ‘big cam’ 290 and the back to front fuller box, memory tells me that it was 13 speed but stand to be corrected.Seem to remember 4 speed range change with a splitter on the top 4? Reg number was …484T, can’t remember the letters but I think it was Birmingham reg.
A mate also got a new one with a Gardner 200(180 with a blower) and what a piece of crap that was. He did a night trunk to Paisley, I did a bit of shunting and trunked to Birtley from Middleton depot, he was not best pleased!!
philt:
I have tried to add some pics of the 401 in its as found condtion.
[/img]
I have located a new bumper and origional indicators.
I did’nt realise that SA were held in such low esteem - I think it’s quite a tidy truck and I love the Rolls engine.
I may also be mad…
I loved the 401, mine had a ■■■■■■■ 290 in it (day cab like yours) please, please restore it in Wilkinson Transport colours !!!
