My old Strato I use to run over the water with … much to the amusement of the lads with the big Swedes
Few I have saved on the computer
The Strato had to be one of the smartest motors on the road at the time and had the most useful driveline and a good cab. It was a good package apart from the cable shift. Its a pity that they weren’t more popular. Typical of the British, would rather promote and buy foreign tackle and criticise our own stuff.
A lot of the current journalists in the truck mags seem to over do the crack about the foreign trucks taking over in the 70’s/80’s. There was a picture of an ERF E series in a magazine a while ago and it had written by it something along the lines of The last decent ERF before things declined - what rubbish, the EC was an excellent truck but people who dont know any better read this stuff and take it as true.

Totally agree with what you say about the Strato but having operated an EC I would disagree about the ERF, whereas the Strato was ahead of it’s time the EC was a decade too late, a good lorry but a bit dated.

Hello John, as I have mentioned before I had a Strato at Sadlers for a while, (8 legger) I also drove 349 a few times, the ‘G’ reg was at Thornaby all the time I was there and was driven by Alan Scott until he went in the office. If you look in the background of the 1st photo (my 95) you can see the ‘G’ reg to the left and 349 to the right. As mentioned by others I was not fond of the cable gearshift, but apart from that not a bad motor. Regards, Mizzo.
Here’s a few pic’s of the Strato my dad drove for P.J.Butler in Oldbury.I remember it coming from Millwards in West Brom,i thought it was a cracking truck and my dad thought it was too, only issue i remembered it having was the front cab mountings “banging” as it went down the road,it went through loads of front cab bush’s.
Shame they didn’t keep it long, sold onto S Jones at Aldridge for the Norfolk line contract and got obliterated there!

Yes mate i remember my dad had his the same time at Butlers , what a cracking truck it was too with air kit and brand new curtainsider and the old man still thinks it was 1 of the best trucks he had ever driven.(I would love a drive in 1 now) . I belive Butlers got rid because of finacial difficulties after losing contracts and i think they had to have a pay cut and be lumbered with older Aki 401s… I will have to find the photos out 1 day.
Strato every time for me, is it that the Daf looks to plain ?
ex Ken King bulk haulage & still working albeit as a shunter for a local garage , S reg if i remember right, there were two of them , this ones here the other went to bowerings feeds in bridgwater , although not a clue what happened to it or where it went from there . still got to be worth a few £ hasn’t it ?
