Securing drums of oil

With a full load of drums at 205 litres each, how do you strap them in as when you place a ratchet strap over the drum or the pallet it slides off?The ratchet straps become lose.

Im assuming you mean plastic drums i usually have them 4 on a pallet and put another pallet on top then ratchet strap them down this works very well and you gain pallets to sell.
If i cant do this them its make sure there banded or really well wrapped to the pallets and again ratchet them down using bits of wood card or anything you can find to give the strap some friction. HTH

Steel drums, but thanks for the tips.

Oh to use rope like in the old days like my old man taught me !

Or pallets on top and ratchet down the lot per pallet

Flysheet and rope.

We used to load them on the roll with wooden chocks under every third row, then sheet them and rope between each row :stuck_out_tongue:

Now it seems that gravity has got much stronger and one strap across the back is enough

I hope you didnt rope over the flysheet cav

Yep, sheet the lot then rope between each row with a criss cross round the back. Assuming they are standing up !

Never done more than one steel 205 at a time but for just one put a metre length of 4x4 across the top and then a ratchet strap over that. :sunglasses:

Exactly … unless it’s a van, then why the hell are you asking

Used to go to Gulf oil at Ellsmere port and pick up 88 forty five gallon drums on a flat.
80 on the bed and 8 on top laid down.

Used to back sheet the arse end then the front sheet and lock them down tight with quarter P+O rope and never had a “shift”

Once tried it years later with straps. What a bloody disaster.Crushed drum walls, rolling, backslide.

Drums should still be carried under ropes and sheets by law.The sheet gives you the “grab” and the ropes dont squeeze the drums out of shape due to their thin surface area. You can drag the ropes tight with double dollies and the drums retain their shape.Only other way is in a van trailer but then your risk splitting as the bloody things shift about.

The best way I always found if they were all stood up on a flat was a double barrel hitch and a flysheet,if they were topped I sheeted the lot,not hard.
regards dave.

a barrel hitch with a dolly knot on each outside drum. wont go anywhere

Albeit, at a leisurley pace . . .
If that had an International engine and a DB box you wouldnt have got enough speed up to make the sheet ripple

Used to carry them everyday for Castrol, with 1ltr & 5ltr tins on top, ropes and sheets every time, never had any move or any spillages.

nails.

This is what happens if you do not secure them properly :stuck_out_tongue:
