Sorry Pat, the only thing that I can tell you about the Dempsey Brothers is that their father owned a transport company in Manchester in the 80s. The last time that I saw them both together was in Zeebrugge about 1987. They were both running Switzerland working for a Swiss company, I am not sure if John had a wagon and drag. Come to think of it I did see Mick in Trafford Park about four years later.
My brother Foden 46 sent me a couple of old photographs that he picked up in a car boot sale. I hope that you might know something about this Volvo, I was going to post it on the Old Southampton thread as it’s a Sea Route Trailer but looking at the Manchester registration number it might of run out of Heywood.
Regards Steve.
Thanks for that Mushroomman not sure but I know the Dempsey’s had two Volvos when they were on for SRF Heywood one was a horrible colour it may have been the one next to this black one although I though it was a sandy sort of colour, cant quite read the name on the door AB Trucking? I definitely rings a bell though.
I remember another driver that was on for SRF Heywood was Frank Brandon I remember he rolled a Sea Route truck and trailer on the notorious Chilworth roundabout coming out of Southampton.
A subbie of Mine ran this Volvo when I was at Russell Davies in the late 80’s.His name was Terry Pape (sadly no longer with us) and traded as A and B trucking due to the reg number I guess. But then it had a tag axle and we only done containers so maybe this pic was an earlier life.Colour scheme still the same tho -couldn’t miss it.
Frank Brandon , now he was in my opinion one of the great characters of continental work in the 1980s. I heard an amusing story about Frank just after he had split up with his first wife. He had just got back from a trip to Saudi and after walking into his house he sensed that some thing was missing, his microwave had gone :. There appeared to be no sign of a break-in so he made a few enquiries with the neighbours, one of them said that they had seen Franks ex just after he had left a few weeks before .
Frank went around to see her and there was his microwave which he quickly removed back to his place. When he got back from his next trip he was surprised to find that his microwave had disappeared again , so he went round to see his ex and there it was. After a few words with her he took his microwave back home.
This I was told went on for about five month’s and I think that in the end he let her keep it.
In the nineties I worked for a great bloke called Steve Appleyard who used to drink in the same pub as Frank. I asked Steve one morning if he had seen Frank recently. His reply was “ yes, last night in the Wardle working men’s club, he was asleep under the pool table”.
