lawrence, couldnt agree more about the abilities of fodens. remember back in 1977 climbing tarsus mountain in turkey in a transcon lightley laden, came up behind my mate in a i think a1924 merc, snowing like hell i came to a stop as couldnt get by him . behind me was a s80 foden 8 wheel mt tipper belonging to foster yeoman from somerset.( there was about a dozen or so tippers following us to saudi, as they had bought a quarry there) . anyway this foden pulls in front of me and puts the towbar on the front of me, puts it in gear and just pulls away no wheel spin, no fuss, just pulls me to the top ,on about 3 or 4 inches of snow.!!!

Evening all, dont know why, but over the last few months I have become all "misty eyed" over the familys Fodens that I drove back in the 60s. S20, 4LK 4wheeler, (France &UK), S21, 4x2 tractor, 12sp, 150LX Gardner, (UK, France & Italy), No hill was too steep, no journey too long, though by the time the family progressed to S36, and S39 cabs, sitting over two strokes, and 180 Gardners, I was selling Atkinsons with 220 ■■■■■■■■ and Fuller single stick boxes, and I really did not want to drive the, (as they had become), slow, outdated Fodens. In their day they were superb, but they did not move, or anticipate the changing times. By 1980, post the Engineers strike, (oh Britains disease), Fuller became the standard gearbox, (and 400 men became unemployed), but Engineering excellence shone through. The S10, in sleeper form could couple legally to a 40ft trailer, inside the 15metre overall limit, and weighed a commendable 6 to 6.5 tonnes, depending on engine specified. Few products could match the specification, but the Dealer network was, with a few notable exceptions, tired, and unable to respond to the changing market place. By then our family business had ceased to operate vehicles, (the "reward" having departed from Hire and reward, never to return)! and I was working in France, and had little interest in the UK market place. Today, well I remember how easy it was to out pace those "fuming" Fiat, and Lancia "milipede" drawbars, and roll along those tree lined Route Nationals in company with the most beautiful lorry ever built, Frances magnificent Bernard, proud to be piloting Sandbach`s finest product, Foden. Cheerio for now.

Hope you dont mind Bubbs, this is a pic of my Grandads Foden Speed Six Steam Waggon. My Dad recalled the other day of this old girls pulling ability.(No pun intended) There was an Eight wheel Leyland with a Drag attached fully loaded at the bottom of the Jockey pitch Pontypool broke down.Grandad stopped with the Foden, also fully loaded with stone. The driver said he only needed to get to the other side of Pontypool,Grandad said he would tow him,the driver said he had no hope. The Foden duly obliged and pulled the outfit without a problem. The driver was amazed,Grandad said she would have pulled two loaded waggon and drags.Regards Rich.

Heres an old 'un from a long gone haulier,A Crusader from Gores at home in High Littleton.

hiya,
Read a story in Headlight many moons ago about a batch of Fodens being exported to either Spain or Portugal having to be re-badged as “Poden” something about Foden being a rude word in one or both of those languages, myself being barely able to speak English wouldn’t have a clue, any info??.
thanks harry long retired.

Yes Harry Foden did have to rename the motors as Poden as far as I can remember they were buses, & Foden meant the U.K.Fword, there was some pictures in one of the magazines as I recall. , but thats a long time ago ?, Regars Larry

I’m sure they were Bennetts of Thame motors that they sent over to work locally in Portugal

And these 2 had to be amongst the last fibreglass cabbed ones…

[/quote]
Those 4000s still look good Im pretty sure Terry Seamen has the last 4000 series in the uk on an x reg and it was the last foden built at sandbach.
They must be among the last tippers as the alpha had been out for a couple of years by then.

That snap was taken in Boro Market ,the Customs clearance was thru the market & by the side of the Thames. We used to come up from Marseilles & clear the containers. I had a 3 axel F88 working for Malta+. Silver knight stopped working for Malta+ when we got more motors. It was a great job. London to Marseilles ,book into hotel on the Quai des Belges ,wait for the boat to arrive from Malta ,pick up the containers for London & home.

quality pics again bubbs

like the rare R cab 6wheeler , i wouldn’t be surprised if you do have a shot if it bubb s, but i do remember years ago regularly seeing a daycabbed 112 / 113 Rcab tractor unit running about the M5 / M4 area , green colours, hauling potatoes , Marquand i think was the company ?

ahh KHH that was my first MVF lorry when i went back , although i do remember it bought new & in her MVF white livery.
Fitted with a sucker blower body, KHH is it’s 3rd chassis,
She’s an FM12 380 4 over 4, 8x4 & pulls like the preverbial train , still in my opinion one of the best drives still at bridgwater compared to the auto DAF & newer auto FMs, unfortunately she’s up for replacement the end of the year Scania G cab 8wheeler with a new sucker blower body will take over , not sure wether KHH will stay on the fleet somewhere but would be sad to see it go although the body is now pretty worn out.
if i have a saturday & my lorry wont go into the farms i need to get to i always ask for KHH, even though her regular driver & i work the same weekends & a newer scania is sitting in the yard ,it’s still worh asking
not sure if pimmer has used her ?

one of my best pictures was of KHH

before the MVF stickers were applied , taken about 6 years ago ? i used to polish it once a month

Oliver Huish ran this White Road Boss, seen here at their yard in 1984. My Dads old Reiver in the back ground after years of searching there she is amazing. Thank you bubbleman.

A361 near Frome now and Weeks’s Strato tipper heads towards Shepton Mallet.

Hello again, good feedback lads, heres todays offering,

An owner driven Sed/Atk 301,cant remember where I took it :unamused:

The reinvented Arthur Oakley transport became Rotherwas transport, this ERF E14
is seen westbound on the M4

A 401 of Harwich Transport on Leigh Delamere services,1982…dont think the roping and sheeting is up to much,I can imagine Harry and Dennis “Tut Tuting” at that effort.

A smartly turned out 113 of R.J.Murrays heads west along the M4.

Interesting pic this one, obviously from the Swains of Stretton stable but the Merc is lettered to Permatrans then its got a Hattons fridge on the back…a bit of a mish mash

Finally,a nicely posed 2534 Merc of Blue Lines when nearly new.

Hope these are ok

Cheers Bubbs,

Barry Warners Seddon Atkinson looks as if it was taken at a classic show at Wellesbourne when Vee & Inline Diesels had a stand. It was later stolen and last seen heading south through the roadworks on the M1. It is thought that it disappeared into S London where it was broken up. There was a big article about the gang in the press when they were caught. I don’t think anybody actually found out how many they had stolen, broken up and exported.

Classicman…spot on,that is where I took the Sed/Atk…I racked my brain trying to remember …I’m getting too old for this :unamused:

Cheers Bubbs,

They must be among the last tippers as the alpha had been out for a couple of years by then.

We had a tradition of buying outdated cabs; Before my time Smiths bought the S39-bag of crap they were sent back as steering them was a joke and the cabs bounced…we also bought some of the last Bisons and even “modernised”…to the ERF EC11 (just as they were being phased out  Oh, don’t mention the Volvo FE7s either   I don’t know why we didn’t go to the 85 based cab (until we had to), payload I suppose although the Harsh bodies on those were heavier than Charltons and rusted easier than the ageing Charrolds and newer Charltons we ran at the time. Those 2 had 340 ■■■■■■■ Celect engines and only cost about £280 to tax at the end; the downside was they were thirsty (6-6.5mpg if the computers were right) and they had this crap immobiliser that would arm within 10seconds of turning off the engine. Caught me out several times
