THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO!!!
There was an old haulier in Hull called Ken Cutsforth and somehow we acquired on of his trailers and ran it for many years. It was identical to that and known as C27.
It was also an early learning curve as to how a spread axle tandem and a triaxle trailer behaved differently. I used to have one hell of a job to reverse that one into the workshops without a shunt forward
Hi again, heres some more clippings…not a very nice one to start with…but I suppose we’ve all seen something like it on our travels
Cheers Bubbs,
Nice shots there Marcus,as per usual!! I hope the driver of the AEC managed to get out un-hurt! but it looks bad dosen’t it.The Guy tanker IIRC belonged to the late Watson Sayer (aka “The King of the Pennines”) He had quite a large and diverse operation up to the 60’s,he had an HGV/Car garage and Transport cafe/digs at Brough but also had a couple of quarries and,I believe, had interests over on Teeside. One funny incident I re-call from the late 50’s was when he erected a large neon sign at Brough without permission. He was ordered by the council to take it down and he refused! So when the council wallahs turned up to take it down there was a Shorthorn bull tethered to the sign so there was a right carryon until a local bobby with “farming” experience led it away!! It made the national papers in those days!!! Cheers Dennis.
Frankydobo:
The GUY Twin Steer wouldn’t have had a big motor in, the grille size points to that, being the same as fitted to the Big J6 Truck and Tipper chassis of 1966 and that came with the ■■■■■■■ V6, 170 or 200, Gardner 6LX and AEC 471 and 505 as choices, so even if they bumped the engine up for this tractor to run at 32 Ton GCW it may only have had a ■■■■■■■ Six or 180 Gardner even if that engine was introduced by then, production of any Twin Steer tractor was short lived as the 68 C&U regs rendered them impractical apart from certain applications such as tanker work.
By the way my 71 edition of the Observers Commercial Vehicles book shows BIG J’s fitted with ■■■■■■■ of 252, 270 and 310 options on the 6x4 tractor (even that didn’t have an 8LXB) with the biggest being the NTK350 in the eight wheeler export wagon and drag model, the Rolls Eagle was offered on 4x2 tractors but all of these have the revised bigger grille. Bit of teasing going on to get Bewick and Harry biting I suspect but it would be interesting to know where the unit went and what it had under the bonnet. Franky.
No chance Franky! “H” and me are well on top as regards the GUY 8LXB “thingy” but that Guy your looking for might turn up yet as Dave the Renegade is still digging at Fallings Park with a JCB,although all he’s excavated so far is an old bike frame and a Mk1 supermarket trolley!! Cheers Bewick.
Hi Marc,
I used to talk to this chap regular on the CB about 30 years ago.He had a bad accident on the A470 at Cwmbelan near Llanidloes and ended up like myself.I remember chatting to him when he was in hospital at Gobowen,Oswestry about 20 years ago.His handle on the CB was Shenandoah, but I can’t remember his first name.
Cheers Dave.

Cheers Dave.

The first pic is not me being careless with the scissors,it was the bottom of the page…honest.
Cheers Bubbs,
Hi All
The steamers do have springs but we checked before the off thats why theres such a big gap between them so we could go forward if needed.

Hi Marc,
I think he had a Volvo F88 rigid with a drag before the M A N.One of the West Wales lads will correct me if I’m wrong.
Cheers Dave.
MOC:
Does anyone know who’s the red bonneted Merc was? Looks like it could be one of Larrow Transport (Northern) Ltd. to me which was the last firm that Davies Bros from the Highway in the east end of London ran! Could be wrong though as the TA stickers are throwing me!! One thing though, the outfit would probably be over length as it looks to be coupled to a 40ft York SL widespread!!! Won’t comment on the roping and sheeting!! Cheers Bewick.

We’er home and dry “H” as far as the Big J 8LXB fiasco!!! That Big J has an American built ■■■■■■■ 335 engine(Trev H will confirm!) But I must say I have a bit fancy for that Big J steer tractor on an earlier post,I wonder what spec it was? discounting the fact that it didn’t have an 8LXB engine!! Cheers hic! hic! Dennis.

hiya,
Dennis I actually drove a Big “J” as my regular motor and I quite liked them the one I drove was “Roller” engined and it never let me down and I did drive it hard, I did find it a bit funny at first coming off a “ballroom on wheels” (F88) but the old Volvo was well past it and rarely completed a trip without needing attention and the Guy was at least dependable yea all in all a decent motor the only drawback I could think would be that if you wanted to sleep in the cab it would be nigh impossible to construct any sort of a bed in there with that huge engine cover but for me it was OK being a bit fond of a proper bed.
thanks harry long retired.
Dead right there “H”,I always said that you spent 12/14 hours in the bleeding cab without dossing in it as well!! Digs here we come every time!! Cheers Dennis.
