Hi again lads, nice old stuff from Rogers collection Robin…thanks for sharing them
Another page from an ABC guide, look at the hat on the driver…I recall some tanker lads having them and bus drivers being issued them but a general haulier expecting their men to wear a peaked cap like Hitler must have been a bit much …Anyone on here wore one in the line of duty
Cheers Bubbs,
Are you sure he’s the driver, Bubbs? I don’t remember seeing them kitted out like that but I could be wrong. With the double breasted blazer he looks more like a naval (Merchant?) officer or perhaps customs official.
I remember when they started the Scandinavian service, not with 86s but with D series Fords. I went along to Ruddington for a job, the rumour was that the drivers could take their wives along and were put up in hotels while abroad. Didn’t get the job so can’t be sure of the accuracy of that rumour though. No doubt there will be another oldie along soon with the good oil.
Just had another look at the picture and I think it was taken outside the memorial on the Trent Embankment in Nottingham. So maybe he was the driver after all.
Hi,yeah you could be right, the bloke with the hat does look official but I think TJ would have had him giving paperwork to the man at the wheel etc.As TJ seem to be a good employer they may have been image concious …I wouldn’t have been comfortable wearing a hat like that though
Cheers Bubbs,

Cheers Bubbs,
Nor me, nor a tie either.
When I was transport manager at Toray Textiles in Nottingham (formerly Courtaulds) I only wore a tie under protest and with a loose knot. Then one day I noticed that the Japanese senior management often did not wear them and was told that in Japan they were considered less than desirable from a safety point of view and that they only wore them in England to conform to British norms. That was all I needed, no tie from that day on.

Hi Trev,Still got my Bubble mate but she’ll be going next year .Harry…thanks for the kind words about her,I know 86s are well down your list of favorite wagons but I reckon you could actually climb up in her mate (as its an easy access cab)and put her through her paces .Dont forget 86s are great for blindside reversing…just gotta look out the back windows…Happy Christmas Harry
Cheers Bubbs,
