Lawrence there was one based at Sheffield depot "Leaping Lena " I have been on it when a nipper as my dad double headed it with his Matador and I rode with Cliff who was the regular driver. I was allowed to pump the diesel up from the fuel tank as there was a lift pump on the passenger bulkhead and it then gravity fed to the engine and I do remember coming home very scruffy and Ma having a go at dad I would have been about 7 years old at the time.
When I started mating at Pickfords in 67 I mated Cliff for about 7 or 8 months and he had a few tales about leaping lena and he was a real hard old boy but he learnt me quite a lot about heavy haulage as well as having me driving the super constructor in the first week I started and then the contractor which he had me driving officially as you could work 14 hour spreadover’s with 2 drivers so all the crew earned more.
cheers Johnnie

Evening all, super contributions, this thread just get`s better! The Scammel 100 ton in the Leyland Museum is owned by my friend Maurice Hudson, as is the Foden exhibit. In my office hangs a beautiful 24inch square photograph of this lorry, taken just after Maurice had painted her in his company livery, having purchased her from Hardwicks at Ewell, that I acquired from the late Frank Watkins of Denbigh, a really first rate chap. Amazing how this thread rolls out the memories. Cheerio for now.

Hi Saviem

Sorry to hear that Frank Watkins is no longer with us, I bought a few lorries from him when he was at St Asaph including this one a K reg AEC Mercury fourwheeler. I remeber him telling me that he bought virtually the whole of Eric Baker’s fleet ERF’s from here in Southampton and when he got them back he found all sorts of combinations of various engine changes.

Regards Pat

Hello ainacs, Frank was one of the old school, he would always stand by his word. He, and I, became very firm friends, we knew and dealt with the same people, and both shared a love of Horses. His funeral was probably one of the largest gatherings of Lorry trade people for many years, just about every dealer in the UK and Ireland attended, and as Frank would have liked it, it was a celebration of his life, not a dirge. His son Neil still runs a business from the St Asaph yard, CVAM, he is a good lad. Remember Franks beautifully presented sailing calendars? and his cheques, with a frontal view of a 110 Scania printed on them? Ive a framed one in the farm office, it`s a link with someone I rated very highly, and have nothing but happy memories of. Cheerio for now.

That Leggett motor’s very clean must be Dave Jefferies, only he could keep a motor that smart. Nice picture Bubbleman.

Ossie
