It’s not for the faint hearted to take that load up there. One wrong move and it’s a disaster.
124 ton load plus units and trailers.

As a child i lived at the top of the steep hill at Austerlands near Oldham on the old A62 and remember all the transformers, built by Ferranti’s at Hollinwood, being hauled by Wynn’s over the Pennines.
Happy Days
Here’s a few more.
This picture was taken on the A62 heading down towards Delph.
the Cross Keys pub… now a Chinese restaurant
If that lot had have set off by itself there would have been no Delph.
I have a mental picture of some of Fast Eddies young superstars handling an outfit like that. Scary.

Same loction in the late 1960’s
This was a very busy road over the Pennines before the opening of the M62.
Looks like a Kencast (remember them) TK in the Layby

I reckon it was nearly as busy as Woodhead . Bottom of that hill, in Delph, was the start of the pull up Standedge from the Oldham side.
I wish I’d a shilling for everytime I’ve used that road. No M62, you were as fast as the slowest man, overtaking (if you had the power or were empty) was just about impossible, and we won’t talk about winter time, it only needed one to loose it’s grip and that was it, job stopped, shovels out.

I certainly do Ray, they had a depot on The East Lancs Road at Haydock.

Yes it certainly is also in the picture on the left is a car.
It was owned by Janet Barrett of ‘Barrett’s of Delph’ and it is parked outside her house which is just out of shot on the left.

Hiya Steve, the depot was on the Lancs at Astley, corner of Chaddock Lane.
While mentioning Kenkast, do you remember the car that was on the roof of their offices. I was told by one of their drivers that the car once belonged to a well known film star. Don’t know whether this was true or not.
