That strikes a chill in my belly. One of our local hauliers was heading home from the London area with a 20-ft loaded box. As he approached the bottom of Chalk Hill on thev A40- before the M40 was built- he had to pile on the brakes in an attempt to avoid a car which had emerged from a side turning. The box was fastened to the platform by two chains & sylvesters and slid forward much in the style of the vehicle in the photograph. The resulting mess took an age to clear up and left a widow and young child without a breadwinner.
In those early days of shipping containers it wasn’t generally realised just how much force was involved when travelling at around 40mph. The vehicle was relatively easy to stop- a fully loaded box was another thing altogether.

hiya,
Doesn’t bear thinking about when pulling for Northern Ireland Trailers I’ve travelled the
length and breadth of the country with containers “fastened on” to a flat trailer with
nothing more than rope through the container fixings didn’t even have chains and war-
wicks to try and secure them with, thankfully I got back on the BRS and there it was a
no no to carry boxes with a trailer not having twistlocks.
thanks harry, long retired.

A few years ago some containers WERE BLOWN off a freight train on the West Coast main line. None of the twist locks had been engaged, the containers were just dropped on the flat bed rail cars.
Many years ago, Birstall traffic lights a de mountable waste skip set off from the light, skip shot off backwards off an 8 legger, the car and occupants behind had no chance.

Marcus is away for a few days so here’s a few to keep it going

Is it my old knackered eyes or has the recovery driver lifted the Atki by shoving his jib through the radiator?

You are right it does look like a Ripponden lorry, but its not what it seems !!
Tuffnells had a few bodys built after copying the ones we built at Ripponden, about the time I started at " the District " in 1964.
Didnt quite get it right and soon reverted to " tin boxes " !! We carried on with ours for years.
Regards John.

Question for the next Lorry Drivers’ Quiz-
How many chassis can you put under the same Ripponden body

In its hey day,Ripponden had a new chassis delivered,Albion being first choice,Commer TS3 second choice, because we could not get enough Albions, about every 3 weeks.
A body would typically be fitted to at least 3 chassis before it ended up in a farmers field.
Caulfield Carriers, later taken over by Atlas Express, bought a lot of our chassis, though very rarely with a body attatched. The drivers who took them to Liverpool always got a few quid off old man Caulfield.

So the answer would usually be, Three and a sheep shed?

one here that has possibly reached the sheep shed stage. The paintwork
seem’s to stand up well.

I think that Albion went to some of the vintage shows in the late 70’s it was at a Steam and vintage show at Errol I remember the Ridgeway family were there with the family Rolls Royce. Eddie.

It was removed from the edge of their yard, where it was on display about a year ago, it may have been sold on.
