What was the point of the half-cab on this work? Trampers couldn’t use them cos where would they put their case/bag etc? Were they bought to stop passengers being carried? Must have been limited re-sale value etc so…

I’m sure I read somewhere that a suitcase was provided for the half-cab drivers by Fodens (probably the size of an Oxo tin) it may have even been on this site. I’ll have a trawl through when I get time.
I know Robinsons did distance work with them as I can recall seeing them a very long way from home. Having said that, digs were more plentiful in those days. Cheers Haddy.

hiya,
Drove one of F F Robinsons half cab abortions with the drivers permission when
delivering to Cricklewood ICI just to enable me to get my motor onto the dock
a distance of about a hundred yards, and believe me it was fifty yards too far,
I asked the shunter what the drivers thought of the things his reply was they
hated them, contrary to what Mr Robinson had written in one of the mags, I
think they was only used on night trunk, I couldn’t see room for a sandwich box
let alone an overnight bag.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hello lads, not been on here for a while,to be honest the box of clippings have been put away up in the loft because there very little left of interest.Heres some pics which Shakeysteve posted down to me…well done mate,
Cheers Bubbs,Can any body confirm is that Guy of GKN , Wellington based . regards kk
No I think it was one of GKN brd transmission division, they had factories in B’ham, Wolverhampton and Newtown Mid Wales. The Chester rd factory in B’ham later moved to Aldridge, they also ran a Scania 110 with their own experimental 2 pedal auto transmission.
Cheers for that Trev , that explains the Staffs reg . regards kk
IIRC one of those ex F&F Robinson Fodens turned up in the R O Hodgson fleet in Carnforth and it was used on shunting between Libbys at Minthorpe and RO’s warehouse in Carnforth.I believe they only had the 6LW engine but it could have been the 150.Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Yes Marc remember Hipwood and Grundy’s and overnighted with their drivers
on many occasions always guaranteed to be not really fit for duty the next day
all good lads with a lot of long serving drivers among them.
thanks harry, long retired.
Hipwood & Grundy’ tanker operation was eventually taken over by Hoyer in about 1991

Like many on here I have done my fair share of night work, on Tankers & Brewery/Depot on the Beer, & one thing I did look forward to was stretching my legs out with feet on the dash (boots off first) for a nice little snooze in the wee dark hours , that would have been a very frustrating no no in those motors
Regards Chris

Hi Rich, Bubbs and all, I remember UNY 1S running out of Cardiff, and I think she transferred up to Rhymney and pulled a tipping trailer as well.
Was UNY 2 and 3 Ryans Deutz"s or Tommy Whites. I think they were supplied by Rhymney Valley Motors. There were not to many 310s out there.
Now 232 8 wheelers a different story.
Regards Paul.
Now I’m all for anyone that looks after their wagon, & a bit of personalisation is fine, but this is rdiculous, looking at the screen I dread to think what the outside was like

Hi Rich, didn’t they repaint some to blue and white? They subbed out a lot more work than they did with their own motors.
Cwm-Bargoed, what a place to get to. Hills which ever way you went, and narrow roads.
Ryans were taking coal in, so a hard slog. We used to take coal south to Rogerstone power station or Newport docks from Taylor- Woodrows open cast.
The preferred route then was through Bargoed and Deri. The hills were certainly alive with the sound of air cooled Deutz"s.
Ryan"s, Alan Price and sons, W.R. Jones (Rhiwderin), T.W. Transport(RVM), Dai Stevens (Tredegar) and Clytha Newport ran quite a few between them.
Alan’s being the premier fleet from R reg to X.
What happened to Ryan"s are they still in business. I know Keith Thomas took over their site at the old HY-MAC facility. Its been years since I was there.
Regards Paul.
stevecook:
Isn’t this a Morris grille panel?:
No, originally Austin used a different grille until Morris discarded the seperate horizontal bars on their grille and they both then used the one shown which was simpler and also made it a lot easier to remove the radiator.
Pete.

Hi paul, Ryan transport is still in business, seen a few iveco stralis trucks painted red with blue stripe, Ryan industrial fuels exhausted theyre coal washing in south wales, went out to belguim and poland, think they sold out after trying deep coal mining.Alan price certainly had plenty of deutz 232 tippers, dai stevens had a few orange painted ones when they were down bottom of tredegar. Dont know much about old hymac factory, but ryans had a site in rhymney somewhere.must have been there perhaps… Rich…
