think this livery will soon be a thing of the past pounding the A roads & motorways of Somerset, i’ve heard from various people that Patten bros of Ilminster Somerset are closing the gates the end of this month
That will be a sad day, once again. It seems like all the good old firms are dying out now, I remember when long established hauliers Morgan’s from Shaftesbury closed, that was a very big shock especially as I had a long connection to the firm and knew all the long serving drivers right back to the early 70’s.
Hi chaps Cartwrights from Amblecote had a big fleet of Guy Invincible artics hauling sand from Lydiate Ash to Margam also . They ran dodge artics as well and several would park up at Hay on Wye for the night , along with Richardsons of Oldbury . regards kk

Hi Keith,
Cartwrights had a couple of drivers based in Kington in the 1960’s. Peter Rouse a big tall bloke about 6’5’’ drove a Dodge with a four-in- line tipping trailer. He often had sand on.
Cheers Dave.

Morgan’s closed in 2008, after 75 years. My two uncles who drove for them, a total of around 60 years between them have been retired for about 14 years now. A lot of their old drivers have passed away but there are some still around. I spent almost every school holiday at markets or abbatoirs, both local and more distant, regular destinations were Banbury and Ashford markets, long trips in the 70’s, but great times.

No I think it was one of GKN brd transmission division, they had factories in B’ham, Wolverhampton and Newtown Mid Wales. The Chester rd factory in B’ham later moved to Aldridge, they also ran a Scania 110 with their own experimental 2 pedal auto transmission.

Yes Marc remember Hipwood and Grundy’s and overnighted with their drivers
