But before this Atkinson lorry was operated by Bulmers Cider,it was operated by Brylcreem:-

This was a Beecham Group motor from new - I don’t believe it was ever operated by Bulmers. I do vaguely recall that it was owned by a Bulmers employee, and that they had contributed to it wearing their livery. This would have been the early 90s, perhaps. Prior to that it was on the fairgrounds. I also met someone else who had a genuine ex-Bulmers motor (can’t remember now who or what) and was miffed that they weren’t interested in his machine!

I don’t recall Bulmers buying second hand motors,as 240 says probably a subbie ran it.
Cheers Dave.

Atkinson Black Knight L2486X,Mk1 Panoramic-cabbed,Flat 8x2,or 8x4 Lorry,LGK 398D.
Thanks for the information
An Atkinson Black Knight 8-Wheeler Lorry, registered LGK 396D,was operated by travelling showman,Tom
Rowland. But I wonder if it was LGK 398D since it’s easy to confuse an 8 for a 6 and vice versa …especially in relatively unclear photographs.

I think it was a Bulmers employee who’d bought it privately for restoration

Maybe the photo is deceiving, the caption in the top shot said the Dodge is pulling a 34ft trailer, to me it looks like a 40ft spread axle ?

It’s a York SL34 widespread alright Trev! I quite liked the SL chassis on a close coupled bogie but apparently the SL chassis was a nightmare on the widespread bogie, they started cracking after only a short while in operation.I never reckoned the widespead set up although some operators did because the bogie was rated at 20ton and allowed 32ton operation but I think they died a “death” when the spacing on the ordinary tandems was altered slightly in '72 (I think) which allowed 32ton operation. However, when I bought out a local haulier in '74 there was 5 C/F widespreads in the 7 trailer fleet,we ran them for a while but I gradually disposed of them, the tyre wear was horrendeous if you didn’t keep on top of them and swap the rubber around !Cheers Dennis.

this one needs saving

I can recall picking a brand new 40’ widespread up from the dealers, going straight to Grimsby Docks and loading a 20’ container with 20 ton in it Put the box on the twistlocks for centre loading and the chassis flexed enough to see a curve in the chockrail. That trailer never regained a level deck . On another occasion with the same trailer whilst screwing round in a customers yard almost pulled a tyre off it’s rim. IMO they wasn’t the best designed trailer to come from York.
Cheers Bassman

13 speed fuller,i cralled along the m62 like i was in a percy 120… as i got to Manchester i knew of a wehigh bridge handy
to the drop…the needle on the weighbridge was a blur as it passed 46ton. thats when the weighbridge chap told me to sod off.
i thought it was odd getting a box that late at night.
