Dave the Renegade:
The only Atkinson that Sharples ran to my Knowledge.
A few for your thread Marc from the earlier part of mine.
Dave, they also had two 8 wheeler Atkinsons, NVJ 247? and RTX 889? Both flat beds on steel from South Wales.
If I remember correctly they both had Gardner 6LWs and David Brown gearboxes.
Best regards, Jack.

Hello again, great pics from Retriever, period stuff …well done mate, now how the bloody hell do I follow that!!! ,anyway heres todays rather drab offering ,Cheers Bubbs,
I can remember seeing the keys of one of the first DAFs being handed over by Ken Golding in the Thornbury Gazette. I’m not sure if it was that one or whether it might have been a brace of 2600 DAFs sold to Eric Vick. I should have kept that cutting. DAF have certainly sold a few since then.
That Maggie Deutz 8 wheeler is interesting too, do you know who had it Bubbs? Jos K Febry & Sons had a new one with a Neville charrold body identical to the one in the picture but I can’t remember if it was a P reg.
Hi lads, great pics from Dave and Nathen, all interesting stuff…loved the b/w shot of Sharples Atki and the Smiths Foden in trouble were different…well done and thanks for sharing them.BB,I remember Jos Febrys Maggie also, not got a pics of it but the one I put on my last posting wasn’t that one…my pal Ade Cypher may have a shot,I’ll ask next time I speak to him.
Heres todays stuff, hope these are ok,Cheers Bubbs,
Hi Marc,
I was working for Ivor Powell at Kington when he had this ERF new in 1968.It was driven by Tom Williams who is now in his 80’s.
I was 20 and driving a BMC 550FG on the building side of the firm.
Tom Williams with a Foden which he had new on Sharples.
Tom drove this one up until he retired for Sharples.
I remember McKenna Plant running Maggie D 8wheelers; Quite heavy and not the most appealing to drivers but McKennas lot thought they were good off roaders and could take some abuse.

Not lorries it’s true, but as there are obviously some Zode fans here, as I used to be, here are a couple of mine. I too drove CAs as a kid, with the door open, the early ones had no strap to hold it back, had to be careful not to brake hard at the same time as giving useful signals to other drivers, such as pointing out two mistakes they’d made, or the door would shoot forward and catch your arm! Wish I still had that Farnham estate!

Piston broke:
I can vaguely remember Joe Febry’s Maggie. Is that the one that John bought, Basil? Or was there two of them…?
That was the one Paul, I can remember Graham Skuse had it new but I couldn’t remember what reg it was. I’m pretty sure it was down at the Bath & West before being delivered but I didn’t take a photo of it. Perhaps Matthew can ask his dad if there are any photos we could borrow. If there are, they’ll be interesting to see, they had a lot of lorries over the years!!

Why do I think it was a ‘V’ reg? I’ve got some photo’s that I’ve dug out from under that pile of white fivers I’ve got but haven’t yet worked out how to upload them!
BOU …V? Fat Wallet (Raymond ) would know, wouldn’t he?
Owned by Roy Chappell for years. Mechanic extraordinaire ( NOT fitter…), he knew his way around most of the quarry lorries in this area and could sort any problem… Retired a few years ago when a lot of new trucks started arriving with r & m contracts. Still around, as fit as a flea - I was chatting to him only a few days ago.
Lawrence Dunbar:
0This Foden was brand new to Corbets from Weardale who were taken over by Golightleys, It was 24T, grossmbut was actually plated to run at 26T, But it was to short a wheelbase when this extra weight was introduced, So it had the chassis lengthened so as it could run at 28T, which gave it a 19T payload wich was good & cheaper to tax than a 30Tonner with a payload of 19 to 20 T., regards Larry.
Tidy looking motor you had there Larry ! Did it have a 150 or a180 engine? Cheers Dennis.
Golightly Group rings a bell Larry, did they run in a blue livery, tippers? If so I once got a lift in one of their Atki Borderers, maybe on a “L” plate,it had the 240 in it and the driver was well pleased.
Aye they did have blue livery. They were quite a big conceren at one time they took a few smaller cos over & also had a Limestone Quarry at Bishopmiddleham Nr, Coxhoe, Regards Larry.
The Atki 240 was the only one they had if i remember, as said they had light blue livery with white writing ,
in the 70`s my cousin Angela worked in the reception at coxhoe.
That WBS depot Andy was the old Robertsons yard had all dark blue Seddons Ralph bought them and William Joys in the same month The Doe Engineering depot was next door to the Magnet and dewdrop pub you had Doe the Scammel dealer one side and Reece Transport and Chartermoor the other side.
