global.

I worked at KMA between 1985/88.Alex Smith (deceased I think) owned KMA.Directors were Douglas Flynn and Andy Anderson, you probably know it’s now owned by SMA.
There were 3 of us on the lorries (DAF 2300 twin sleeper cabs) which were used on the transporters and stepframes trailers. Our job included bringing in cars from garages and small one man businesses who repaired/painted the cars they bought to sell in the auction on Wed/Frid.I had regular runs in the north west area of Aberdeen, although there were frequent pickups in the central belt,we would pick up any car in any condition including small commercial vans.
Stepframe work included picking up all commercil vehicles and miscellaneous items.I brought in a lot of BT and gas board vehicles from their depots throughout Scotland.Often we picked up vehicles from RAF aerodromes as well. Our trailers both had winches for the vehicles we couldn’t start, using dwang and chains and rope to secure them.In the latter 18 months I was staying out 3 nights a week, the drivers if back in time for the sales nights were expected to help out with driving vehicles through the aution.I think KMA started a sales night on Monday.
There was a Sunday market for traders to sell their wares to the public who parked on KMAs site, think it was free parking at one time but that changed. There was a car park on land opposite their premises,KMA ran a bus back and forth for customers who parked there,it was free,I used to drive that bus.On the Monday morning the litter that the traders and public left in the buildings from the Sunday…we had to sweep up,we put the litter into a dustbin motor and the drivers (if had time) took it in turn to take it to the incinerator at Perth.
