theres a simple solution to knowing the limit, dont drink alcohol when your driving then you aint got the fear of being over the limit.
D-ya not?:
The argument is that 0 is unworkable, but for arguments sake, say it was zero, folks would perhaps be less likely to have a drink.
Instead of believing the theory that a couple or even an extra one is not going to put them over the breath limit.
+1
Thats the main problem. Too many people think “well your allowed x glasses of wine or Y pints of beer” but dont actually know its units per milligram, not alcoholic amounts. Alcohol affects everyone differently. What makes one person stagger might not even affect the person next to him. Half a pint and I feel the effects. Under the limit but safe to drive? Nope
It might also stop the next day drivers who get caught out. We keep hearing how its unfair as they stopped drinking X hours before. Yes it might be unfair just to class someone as a drunk driver for that but if your still over the limit all those hours later, how much of a skinfull did you have?
0 might be unworkable but I dont drink and any time ive been breathalysed it always shows 0. Maybe make the limit 0 but set the breathalyser a bit higher would make sure any mouthwash readings etc would still show 0. Or give discretion for a reading showing 8 or below?
the dudes that drink and drive will always drink and drive irrespective of any limit. it will always only affect the borderline cases as a benchmark to calculate the fine. my mates been done twice…dosent care…every night he comes over for a visit he drinks 2 barrack busters of cider, with a couple of doobys the size of drainpipes, then just drives home blocked out of his brains anyway. he dosent care so it will never matter to him or similar .I personally don’t drink and drive at all,but I don’t care what anyone else does.
lets be honest if you listen to a true out in the back wilds Scott they all sound off their heads
The middle and upper classes Iike a glass of alcohol with lunch so it wont ever be set to zero plus there are products than contain alcohol than are not beverages which is lucky for me. I don’t drink alcohol but I do use mouthwash
What is it with this country…and some of you lot that when anything is raised as a problem the answer and ill thought out first option is always… ban it.
Some of you say let’s have zero alcohol, wtf for?? All that amounts to is chucking out the baby with the bathwater
I suppose you agree with banning cheap booze from supermarkets also do you? as that is another example of making responsible people suffer, (who incidentally ARE in the majority, despite what the papers/government try and lead you to believe to justify this b/s) for the actions of a few irresponsible ■■■■ heads.
Personally I like a pint when I park up…cue all the old women having a hot flush equating beer with pro driver, I do NOT drink and drive end of!
When I park up I have a pint with a meal… shock horror a trucker that does not sit in his cab in a lay by all night with his finger up his arse!
So by your brilliant idea thesmall and minute trace of alcohol the next morning,… let’s say the same amount if you have a strong sherry trifle or a alcho based mouthwash 2 mins before you get behind the wheel, (oh! but you didn,t think of that one before you jumped in with the zero thing did you ) is that fair or justifiable? and don’t come back with the propaganda based ■■■■■■■■ about any amount however small impairing reflex and/or judgement, because that’s what it is…■■■■■■■■.
Also if I am on a night crossing ferry I have a couple to three pints depending on how long a crossing it is, it’s called socializing with other drivers…For the younger drivers on here, look it up or ask your dads.
Why tf should I suffer because again of the ■■■■ heads that do not drink responsibly eh? those who are on it all night so get rat arsed and drive off the boat the next morning.
My answer to the problem (apart from some of you lot putting your brains in gear before opening your gobs) is like anything else …Police it don’t ban it.!

Not touched a nerve as such mate, I just get annoyed by people wanting to ban every bloody thing just because they themselves don’t involve themselves in it.
I don’t condone drink driving, if you drive when ■■■■■■ you deserve everything you get. The breathalyser figures were devised after investigation, analysis and expert advice, that stated that you were deemed safe to drive with a certain negligible amount of alchohol on you (personally if I am about to drive of an evening I do not drink at all but that’s just me) but that ain’t good enough for the career politicians that have no expertise in this field but think they know better than the experts, and want to make a name for themselves.
Then you get the 'let’s ban it ’ brigade, I don’t smoke and hate the stink of second hand smoke, but I don’t want it banned ffs, as other people like smoking.

Dont know if its me your talking about here (my psychiatrist says im paranoid but he’s always had it in for me ) but I do agree with you,0 is impossible. There’s alcohol in lots of things and its the reason the limit isnt 0 in the first place, and why it would be completely unworkable. What I was meaning was that having a pint the night before you drive is completely different from getting bladdered and thinking you’ll be ok because you left it X amount of hours. If someone is still over the limit after,say,12 hours from last drink then they’ve had a skinfull. Why would anyone whos had that much consider driving at all just because its been the 12 hours everyone thinks is the be all and end all of being legal next day?
Deiseldog is right, you’ll NEVER stop the ■■■■■■■■ drink drivers. To me,the main problem is the second someone who genuinely belives they are ok to drive and blows a few MM over the limit is classed as a drunk driver and there is no leeway given. Perhaps a bit of common sense and letting the police decide for each circumstance whether an offence has taken place,eg is this person at it or have they made a mistake, would be a better idea. But then again, police, law and common sense rarely go hand in hand!
I like a drink as much as the next guy.
It’s a lot easier to “have none at all when working” though, than try and second-guess “how much you can personally have before you are over the limit”.
“Zero Tolerance” is fine by me. Even having a couple of pints, and driving - will see a professional driver getting short-shrift from the old bill, should they breathalyze you and find that although you are BELOW the legal limit - that you have chosen to have a drink at all when driving a 44t killing machine FFS…

Did someone say ban it …and was is “IT” anyway?
As has been said, a 0 limit, is unworkable, so that’s unlikely to be brought in.
A lower limit than the current 80 milligrams, probably will be introduced in the not too distant future, but that is unlikely to affect most people.

Jeeez H here we go. Yeh let’s call it a killing machine instead of a truck for maximum impact , and to stress a point
. You should pack in driving your ‘killing machine’ mate, andd be the editor of The Guardian with a line like that…ffs.
I would never, as I have already said, have a couple of pints and drive.
Playing some sort of alcohol related Russian roulette hoping you are OK to drive is an entirely different ball game to having a relaxed pint of beer with your evening meal and starting work the next morning. Then losing your license the morning after because of the miniscule trace left, after your hare brained scheme is brought in as the law.
Just being reading about some MP wonker in Scotland trying to get himself noticed and further his mediocre career by calling for a lower limit just for hgv and bus drivers. He reckons there should not be any trace of alchohol in a driver’s system, and to get to that goal driver’s limits should be 30mg per 100ml blood, everybody else will remain at a 50/100ml ratio. Presumably to ensure that him and his cronie mates will be ok the next morning after drinking in the tax payer subsidised Westminster bar the night before.
